Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenika Schreck.
Jenika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into entrepreneurship started at a very young age. From lemonade stands to bake sales, I’ve always loved creating and investing in my passions. My first “official” business was a small housekeeping company I started with my younger sister when we were 10 and 12. We called it Scrub-It-Up, and we cleaned local seniors’ homes for $2.50 an hour each. Looking back, that wasn’t much —but at the time, I truly felt like I was rolling in the dough!
Growing up, whenever I played Monopoly, I was always the one doing it the “Dave Ramsey way.” My friends and family teased me about it, but I usually won. I’d nerd out about piles of savings, expense plans, and investments in houses and hotels. In hindsight, it was probably a good sign that I’d enjoy a future in finance. Still, my path took a few turns before I found my way here.
At 16, I became a Certified Labor Doula and supported local moms through childbirth. In my early twenties, I ran a cleaning and nanny business, followed by an in-home daycare and a remote virtual assistant business. Those seasons allowed me to stay home with my daughter while learning how to run an online business. During that time, I also pursued online college classes and earned my Accounting Essentials certificate—a season that was both challenging and deeply rewarding.
After completing that program, I took an online bookkeeping course and launched Dots & Commas Bookkeeping, LLC in January 2021. Since then, I’ve had the joy of bringing financial clarity to small businesses in the Kansas City metro area and beyond through virtual bookkeeping support. It’s truly a dream come true to partner with dedicated entrepreneurs every day and help them feel confident in their numbers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a mom of three, juggling homemaking, child-rearing, client relationships, and consistent marketing has definitely been a challenge! My business growth has been slow at times, and it’s easy to slip into comparison. But when I take a step back, I’m genuinely grateful for the slower pace—it’s given me time to grow my skills, strengthen my foundations, and build something sustainable.
We’ve been impressed with Dots & Commas Bookkeeping, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dots & Commas Bookkeeping is a boutique bookkeeping firm that helps service-based small business owners find clarity and confidence in their numbers. I specialize in partnering with mompreneurs because I understand firsthand what it’s like to balance faith, family, and entrepreneurship. My mission is to help moms in business move from overwhelm to organization—so they can spend less time stressing about finances and more time focusing on what truly matters.
What sets Dots & Commas apart is the heart behind the numbers. I don’t just deliver financial reports—I help clients understand what those numbers mean for their business decisions, marketing strategy, and long-term goals. Even if you don’t consider yourself a “numbers person,” I believe you can absolutely feel informed when it comes to your finances.
Beyond bookkeeping, I’m passionate about building a community of mompreneurs who are committed to growing their businesses and nurturing their families with purpose. Entrepreneurship doesn’t have to pull you away from motherhood—it can flow beautifully alongside it. I love encouraging women to give themselves grace in the process, to celebrate progress over perfection, and to remember that success isn’t measured by hustle, but by faithfulness in the season they’re in.
I’m most proud of the relationships built with my clients and the trust they place in me. Their reviews and referrals are a reflection of the care, excellence, and integrity I intentionally bring to every project. I treat every set of books as if they were my own because I know how much heart and sacrifice can go into running a small business.
My services include clean-ups (bringing past financials up to date), catch-ups (current-year corrections), and monthly or quarterly bookkeeping support—all tailored to fit the stage and pace of your business. Whether you’re running a side hustle or managing a thriving business, behind on your books or ready for consistent monthly management, I’m here to help you build a strong foundation that supports your growth with grace and confidence.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t really believe in luck—but I do believe in hard work, faith, and making wise decisions. Whether those decisions come in the midst of good seasons or hard ones, I believe we always have the opportunity to choose actions that align with who we’re called to be and the kind of life we want to build.
