Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Marquette.
Hi Jay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I graduated from KU with my bachelor’s, then went to Wichita State to get my Master of Physical Therapy, graduating in 1999. After working in several different settings, I opened my own outpatient clinic in January 2007. We have two locations, Leawood and De Soto. I started with myself and two PTs, and now we have 14 wonderful employees! We have been at the same location in De Soto since 2008 and continue to grow with the community. We moved from 65th and Metcalf to our current Leawood location in 2011 and then moved next door to a bigger place in 2017. We have loved servicing this area and bringing a unique style to our patients. I am where I am today with an excellent group of therapists and front office staff.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
There are always struggles in owning any business. I went through the economic crash in 2008 and COVID-19, a huge struggle for everyone. Thankfully, we did not have to completely close but loss over 50% of our business and it has taken three years to return from the pandemic. We had to figure out a different approach, change schedules, and change some protocols. The biggest struggle was dealing with everyone’s fears, both patients and employees. But we were thankful we did not have to close or lose any employees!
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a privately owned outpatient physical therapy clinic. We treat any orthopedic and sport-related injuries, post-surgical, vestibular/concussion, foot issues, and other muscle-related injuries. We specialize in many things, such as dry needling, shockwave, MSK ultrasound, Graston Technique, and women’s pelvic health. We have a PT with his Titleist Performance Institute certification to serve our golfing community. But what sets us apart from most clinics in this area is our direct one-on-one sessions with a PT every time for the entire session. Our patients deserve to be treated as individuals and not be passed to a non-licensed therapist. We are hands-on and do a lot of manual therapy techniques to help the soft tissues/muscles repair successfully so the patient can return to their pre-injury state. I am most proud that we have been able to sustain a high level of care by using this concept of direct patient care. I believe when you come to Marquette Physical Therapy, you will notice the difference in treatment and care as compared to other clinics, but you have to experience it to believe it 😉
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Physical therapy is more than exercise. It is an important part of your health and is usually the most conservative and least expensive approach for muscle-related injuries. In Kansas, you, as a consumer, have direct access, which means you do not need a referral for PT! You also have the right to choose which clinic you want to attend; it does not have to be your doctor’s choice. Try your local privately owned clinics that treat you like family; you will be satisfied.
