Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Kissell.
Hi Jake, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my first landscaping jobs back in high school. At the time, it wasn’t anything fancy—just mowing lawns and laying mulch to make a little extra money. But I quickly realized something: this wasn’t just side cash. It was an opportunity.
While most of my friends were clocking out at the end of the day, I was reinvesting, learning how to bid jobs, manage crews, and grow beyond being just a “kid with a mower.” By the time I graduated, what started as a hustle had turned into a real business.
The grind wasn’t easy—long days, mistakes, underbidding jobs, and reinvesting every dollar back into equipment and people. But year after year, we scaled. Small residential projects grew into retaining walls, patios, outdoor living spaces, and full-scale construction projects.
Now, at 25, that same business has grown into a multi-million-dollar company.
But here’s the part I’m most passionate about today: teaching. I know what it feels like to be young, ambitious, and hungry to build something bigger. I know the late nights, the self-doubt, the trial and error. And I also know the shortcuts—the systems, strategies, and mindset shifts—that can save years of struggle.
That’s why I’m shifting my focus toward helping other young business owners and contractors scale their companies. If I could build this from nothing in less than a decade, so can you—with the right guidance.
Now my mission is bigger than landscaping: it’s about building leaders, building businesses, and building futures.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started my landscaping business in high school with nothing but a push mower, a borrowed trailer, and a dream. At first, it was just about making some money—but I quickly realized it could be so much more.
The early years were tough. Every dollar I made went straight back into the company. While friends were buying new trucks or going out on weekends, I was buying equipment, fuel, and materials. I wasn’t living flashy—I was building.
One of the hardest parts wasn’t the work itself, but finding the right people. Not everyone had the same vision or work ethic, and I learned fast that the wrong hire can cost you more than money—it can cost you time, reputation, and momentum.
I also struggled with systems. At first, I thought working harder was the answer. But over time, I realized I needed to work smarter. Learning how to track jobs, price correctly, manage crews, and build repeatable processes was what truly allowed me to scale.
There were setbacks, mistakes, and plenty of moments when I wondered if I’d bitten off more than I could chew. But every challenge forced me to grow.
