Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Brunkow.
Glenn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Brunkow Family Lamb is truly a family business with Glenn and Jennifer Brunkow involved along with their adult children Isaac and Tatum. The Brunkows operate a fifth generation farm and ranch that has been in Glenn’s family for nearly 150 years. They are located in the Flint Hills just North of Wamego, Kansas.
The sheep part of their farm started when the kids were in 4-H and, as Glenn says, the kids moved on and the sheep stayed. Jennifer’s grandfather raised sheep near Atwood Kansas in the Northwest part of the state and she wanted to carry that legacy on. The sheep gave Glenn and Jennifer the opportunity to add another enterprise to their farm without adding additional acres.
They practice regenerative agriculture and focus on soil health, rotational grazing along with low stress animal handling.. They have been involved in direct to the consumer meat sales for nearly ten years and really enjoy interacting with customers at the farmers markets in both Manhattan and Wamego. Talking about their farm and their meat is a source of pride for both of them and they serve as advocates for agriculture.
In addition to the sheep, the Brunkows also raise cattle and grow corn, soybeans and hay.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Raising sheep has a steep learning curve and just when you think you have seen everything, the sheep throw us another curve. We have battled weather and other conditions out of our control. The farm economy is always challenging and taking more control of their income has been both a blessing and a challenge. Then throw in a customer driven business and the learning curve is even more steep. Learning customer preferences and market patterns continues to be a challenge also.

Brunkow Family Lamb is part of a fifth generation farm with the sixth generation also participating. The Brunkows specialize in premium, grain fed lamb. They are proud of their product and it is the same meat they serve their own family. Their ewe flock is grazed on native Flint Hills grass and cover crops. They utilize regenerative agriculture to improve their soil health and low stress livestock handling to insure the health of their flock. They enjoy working with their customers to provide them with a high quality eating experience and enjoy sharing their farm and way of life with them also. We believe we provide the best quality, premium lamb that will convert even those who have not liked lamb in the past.
