Exploring Life & Business with Demonté McClary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demonté McClary.

Demonté, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born and raised country boy from Newport News, Virginia. Started finding myself in the 10th grade of high school where I realized I was gifted in football, cosmetology & business. My junior year was when I started to excel in football and enrolled in a trade school for cosmetology. Senior year I was the most wrote about athlete in my region and started to get job offers to work full time in the cosmetology industry. At a fork in the road, I chose football and went 4 hours away to a D1AA college based in Baltimore, Maryland. Freshman year of college I started cutting my teammate’s hair for $5 when the base price was $30 in the city at the time. I fastly sharpened my skills and increased my prices. This was one of my first, most successful and Lucrative businesses. My sophomore year is when I learned how to save and reinvest. I was making around 5-6k a semester.

Blinded by Financial success, I slowly started to shift my interest and focus on “making money”. My grades, Performance on the field and relationship with the team slacked. I found myself being let go and sitting back home on my parent’s couch the very next fall semester. Everything I had and loved was gone! I was lost. I sat out of school for one semester and forced myself into community college but just as a “regular” student this time. I started working out and bumped into a personal trainer that kept me in shape while I continued to market my skills to other college schools to get back on a football field. After a long two years of being completely removed from the game that I loved. Avila University in Kansas City offered me a scholarship, I came sight unseen. After my last school, I told myself I would never cut hair in school again because it was such a distraction. After cutting my roommate a few times, The very next semester, I was back cutting hair and balling. Fast forward a couple of years, my junior year I caught the interest of a few NFL teams. The chiefs, Titian’s and the Vikings invited me to a junior pro day just to “size me up”. The following year after my senior year, I started my NFL/ CFL prep for my senior pro day.

During my training, I trained with college athletes all over the US. This is when I met my 1st business partner. A year after tryouts is when we started getting Airbnb’s we got up to 7 then COVID hit. We got a few grants to cover rent for a while but it wasn’t sustainable. My partners quickly started breaking leases without my knowledge. As soon as I found out, I kept 1 for myself and started Airbnb’ing solo. The following year I had my 1st litter of Cane Corsos and started Modeling with an agency. Since then, I’ve strategically started reinvesting into each business. The profits from airbnb I became an angel investor in real estate. The goal is to save up enough capital to purchase my own properties for my airbnb business. My dog kennel business the profits from that we are going to buy more pups and build an upscale kennel to house the pups. I eventually want a big enough space to board pups, have a dodgy daycare, offer protection classes, sell dog food, supplements and accessories. I still have a passion for the hair and beauty industry. My goal is to have an upscale salon or beauty spa that caters to both men and women.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. For my airbnb business, I lost six units and had to start over. For my real estate investment business, COVID slowed down the rehab process. With my dog kennel, almost quit because it took six years until I had my 1st litter. I lost two pups, one to a heat stroke the other got hit by a car. It takes larger female pups 1.5-2 years to have their 1st heat (menstrual cycle) where the average female pup has her 1st heat at 6-8 months. It’s definitely been a challenge but I always enjoy overcoming challenges because I know deep down I can overcome them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
For my real estate business, I primarily specialize in investing as an Angel investor. Then I have airbnbs that offer more attention and interaction with clients. People don’t really know I invest, I would say I’m more known for my hospitality, Quality service and cleanliness of my airbnbs. What sets me apart is my upscale vibe, quality accessories and my seamless easy to follow instructions. I’m a big believer in systems. I’ve developed systems that work for me that I implement in each of my businesses. I’m most proud of my kennel because I love the breed so much that I take everything in consideration when breeding them. I handpick all of my pups at the age of 6-8weeks. I look for head, hip and bone structure. I look for a certain mussel. The cane corso breed almost went extinct so they bred them with boxers and bull mastiffs to repopulate the cane corso breed. So if you look closely you can see either boxer or bull mastiff features. I want to breed a certain kind of look, style, and temperament. I want your readers to know I take pride in my business and ALWAYS put the customer first! I’m my biggest critic because I always look at my work from so many ways. The good, bad and Ugly. I put myself in the Clients shoes every time and think how the pickiest client would think or what they would look for. I always try to exceed every client’s expectation. All of my business kind of go hand in hand. My last litter, I had clients in multiple states. The ones that flew out to me, I placed them in one of my airbnbs at a discounted rate. And the other clients I drove to them to hand-deliver their pup myself. Be on the lookout for a litter coming This December 2021!!!

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can always support by simply averting any of my business through social media, sharing my business info and even staying in a unit of mine or buying a pup from this upcoming litter.

Colabs: I’m always looking to colab with people or Breeders for future litters or even merchandise ideals. I’m in the process of figuring out a shirt design to gift clients for this next litter. I’d be open to that and even doing a photoshoot / video with the pups. I’m pretty much open to any idea / colab.

I’m still working on my real estate/ airbnb business. I get a lot of people who’d like to be a part of it and that’s Awesome! However, I’m still at a stage where I’d like to get a better grasp on things before having partners again.
