Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Ullrich.
Hi Carolyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was always an intuitive kid and definitely wise beyond my years. I questioned everything, which occasionally meant getting kicked out of Sunday school or arguing with adults because my belief system didn’t necessarily match what I was being taught. I started reading tarot around the age of six, attended my first psychic fair at 13, where I had a memorable experience with a palm reader, and bought my first tarot deck at 16.
But my real awakening, if you will, began when I lost my father at 26. That loss opened the door to connecting with the other side, exploring energy healing, and developing my intuitive and mediumship abilities on a much deeper level. From there, things really just continued to evolve and unfold.
The deeper I got into my journey, I found myself searching for a community of like-minded people and a place where people could explore spirituality, healing, and metaphysical practices in an approachable way. It was really through my own search for that community that the Mystic Fair was born.
What started as my own spiritual journey eventually grew into Empowered Healing KC and my professional work as an intuitive medium, channel, tarot reader, and Reiki Master Teacher. Over the years, the Mystic Fairs have continued to grow and expand into multiple events and cities, bringing together readers, healers, spiritual practitioners, small businesses, and people at every stage of their own journey. I’ve also expanded into writing and publishing books based on the work I’ve spent years practicing and teaching.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. I think the biggest challenge for me has been learning how to navigate my own continued grief while still holding space and providing support for other people. I’ve experienced the loss of some of the closest people in my life throughout the years, and there have been times when I’ve had to figure out where that line exists between showing up for others and allowing myself the space to rest, grieve, and simply be human.
There’s also a weight that comes with knowing that what I do isn’t just about me. I have small business owners, many with families of their own, who depend on me to put on successful events. Then there’s the community itself, including people who seek out spaces like the Mystic Fair as part of their own healing and personal journeys. I put a lot of pressure on myself to show up for my vendors and my community in the right way, and learning how to carry that responsibility without carrying the weight of everyone around me has probably been one of my biggest lessons.
And you’d probably be surprised by how much jealousy, negativity, and criticism can exist even within spiritual communities. I think people sometimes forget that everyone is a mirror, and the more visible or successful you become, the more you can unintentionally trigger things in other people. I’ve always tried to handle that by staying in my own lane, practicing what I preach, and trusting in karma. Ultimately, that part has been much easier for me to navigate than learning how to balance my responsibility to others with giving myself permission to grieve, rest, and take care of myself too.
We’ve been impressed with Empowered Healing KC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Empowered Healing KC really encompasses several different parts of my work. Personally, I have worked with tarot and channeled people’s divine spirit teams for many years, connecting with spirit guides, passed-on loved ones, angels, and other energies to offer insight and validation. I’m also a Reiki Master Teacher, author, educator, and intuitive medium.
One of the things that sets my work apart is the way I blend the spiritual and the practical. I also work in academia and have undergraduate and graduate degrees in communication and leadership, so I’m a firm believer that spirituality should not be used to bypass reality. I want people to leave their time with me feeling validated and connected, but also with tangible insight and practical ways to move forward in their lives. I think my ability to bridge those two worlds has become a big part of what I’m known for.
My work as an intuitive medium is probably my favorite part of what I do, particularly platform mediumship and spirit galleries. There is something incredibly powerful about being able to reach many people at once and demonstrate how Spirit communicates. I love watching the evidence come together and seeing the way the right people somehow find themselves in the same room. The power of that collective never ceases to amaze me.
I also think my personality plays a big role in how I approach this work. I’m honest and raw, but I also believe there can be lightness and even moments of joy within some of our hardest experiences. Having experienced profound and traumatic loss myself, grief is something I understand very personally. In graduate school, I spent a significant amount of time researching humor as a coping mechanism, and one of the greatest compliments I’ve received is that I have an ability to talk about difficult or uncomfortable things in a way that feels honest, approachable, and human. I bring that same philosophy into my mediumship work. Grief doesn’t always have to exist in a dark room.
The other major part of my brand is the Mystic Fairs. What began with the KC Mystic Fair has grown into multiple events throughout the Midwest and is now expanding into Arizona. These are metaphysical, psychic, and holistic wellness fairs that bring together readers, mediums, healers, spiritual practitioners, artists, and metaphysical small businesses, along with workshops and spirit galleries that are included with admission.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve created around these events. The Mystic Fairs are intentionally inclusive and welcoming whether someone has been part of the metaphysical world for decades, is just beginning to explore it, or walks through the door having absolutely no idea what any of it means. I want people to have a judgment-free space where they can explore, ask questions, learn, heal, and simply be themselves. I’m equally proud that these events provide a platform for so many small business owners and practitioners to share what they do and build their own businesses.
Ultimately, whether someone encounters my work through a reading, a spirit gallery, Reiki, one of my books, a workshop, or one of the Mystic Fairs, the purpose behind it is the same: helping people better understand themselves, feel connected and validated, and live more authentically and in alignment with who they truly are.

There are a lot of different ways to work with me or become part of the community. I offer private intuitive and mediumship readings, spirit galleries, Reiki training and workshops, as well as business and Enneagram coaching. My books on tarot and Reiki are also available for those who prefer to learn and explore on their own.
For practitioners and small business owners, there are opportunities to participate in the Mystic Fairs as readers, healers, vendors, and workshop facilitators. I’m always interested in connecting with people and businesses that align with the inclusive, community-centered environment we’ve created.
Giving back is also an important part of the Mystic Fairs. At every event, we raise money to support members of our Mystic Fair family who are experiencing hardship, and I provide free event spaces to nonprofit organizations. I’m always grateful for donations and community support that allow us to continue helping these causes.
