Today we’d like to introduce you to Cambre Napier.
Hi Cambre, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am 43 years old.
I started modeling when I was 16. Although life strayed in a different direction for me after high school, I always knew I had a passion for modeling. After several years, a marriage, and three kids later I felt that I was missing something. I had always loved the confidence that modeling gave me. However, I questioned my own self, my age and my appearance. I decided that I was just going to go for it and see what became of it, so I booked the shoot! The first shoot was a success and I felt the need to keep going. I knew I wanted to continue on with the modeling, but I wanted it to be more than just modeling. I wanted other women to feel the same sense of confidence that I just did after my shoot. I wanted other women to feel that no matter how many kids, how old, size, shape or looks, that it was never too late to just go for it.
I proceeded on but noticed that there are certain people in this industry that look down on plus-size or curve models. I noticed that they treated me a little different than the average size models. I was told that I wasn’t worth a photographer’s time because shooting me would get them no where! That not only made me try harder, it made me do something better! I then created Curve Network KC with another plus-size model in Kansas City!
Best decision we ever made!
Curve Network KC is a network to help other models or like-minded individuals in the area to collaborate, educate, and provide insight to this industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have hit several bumps in the road. I have had designers, photographers and other people in the industry look at me differently, not only because of my size but also because of my age. There have been times where makeup artists ask me…. Are you the model?
We’ve been impressed with Curve Network KC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Curve Network KC is a group of curvy and plus-size models, influencers and like-minded individuals who collaborate, educate and provide insight to the industry here in Kansas City. We are different as we are trying to change the fashion industry here in Kansas City to provide more work for plus-size models. We want to see more plus-size models on the runway, in magazines and advertisements. We want to change the views of people who normally wouldn’t work with us.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel that professionalism is one of the most important characteristics to have In this industry. Your image and professionalism can make or break you. Confidence is the other most important Characteristic to have as confidence is key in this industry!
