Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynn Everist.
Hi Brynn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Medicine has always been about relationships for me. I grew up in Kansas City, studied at Boston College, returned home for medical school at the University of Kansas, completed my pediatric residency at Mayo Clinic, and eventually came back to Kansas City for fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology. Along the way I realized that, while medicine continues to advance rapidly, the patient experience often hasn’t kept pace.
After working in traditional healthcare settings, I took a leap of faith and founded Prairie Allergy because I wanted to build the kind of practice I had always imagined—a place where patients have time to be heard, understand their condition, and participate in decisions about their care. Rather than rushing through appointments, we focus on personalized treatment plans that fit each person’s lifestyle, whether that means environmental allergies, asthma, eczema, food allergies, or immune disorders. We also introduced Kansas City’s first Direct Specialty Care allergy practice, with transparent pricing and longer visits, allowing us to prioritize relationships over volume.
What excites me most is that allergy and immunology is one of the fastest-moving fields in medicine. I love bringing innovative treatments to Kansas City that many patients don’t realize exist—from home-based allergy drops to rapid immunotherapy techniques that dramatically reduce the time commitment of traditional allergy shots. My goal has never been simply to treat symptoms; it’s to give people the freedom to enjoy life without allergies dictating what they can eat, where they can go, or how they spend time with the people they love.
Looking back, starting Prairie Allergy was certainly the biggest professional risk I’ve ever taken, but it’s also been the most rewarding. Every day I get to combine science, innovation, and genuine human connection, and that’s exactly the kind of physician—and business owner—I always hoped to become.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not—but I don’t think most worthwhile things are.
Leaving the security of an established practice to start Prairie Allergy from scratch was both exciting and terrifying. Suddenly I wasn’t just an allergist—I was also the CEO, marketer, accountant, HR department, IT support, and sometimes even the person assembling furniture on the weekends. There were moments when I questioned whether anyone would actually find us, and whether I had made the right decision.
One of the biggest challenges was building trust. Direct Specialty Care is still a relatively new concept, and many patients had never experienced healthcare without insurance dictating every aspect of their visit. It took time to help people understand that spending more time with their physician, offering transparent pricing, and creating truly individualized care could actually make healthcare simpler and more accessible.
As a physician, another challenge has been balancing innovation with responsibility. I’m passionate about bringing new allergy treatments to Kansas City, but I also believe they need to be backed by sound science and introduced thoughtfully. That means spending countless hours studying the evidence, pursuing additional training, investing in new technology, and sometimes taking the harder path instead of the easier one.
Perhaps the biggest lesson has been learning to embrace uncertainty. Entrepreneurship requires a different mindset than medicine. In medicine, we’re trained to minimize risk and strive for certainty. Building a business requires calculated risks, creativity, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when you don’t have all the answers. Looking back, those challenges have shaped not only the practice we’ve built but also the leader I’ve become.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Prairie Allergy was built around a simple idea: allergy care should be personal, innovative, and centered on the patient—not the healthcare system.
We care for both children and adults with seasonal allergies, asthma, eczema, food allergies, hives, medication allergies, insect sting allergies, and immune deficiencies. But what really distinguishes us is our commitment to offering the full spectrum of modern allergy care. Every patient is different, so their treatment should be too. For some people, that may mean traditional allergy shots. For others, it could be allergy drops taken at home, oral immunotherapy for food allergies, biologic medications, or one of our newer rapid immunotherapy approaches designed to dramatically shorten treatment time.
As Kansas City’s first Direct Specialty Care allergy practice, we’ve intentionally created a different experience. Our appointments are longer, our pricing is transparent, and our recommendations are based on what’s best for the patient—not what fits into a busy schedule or insurance model. We believe that listening is one of the most powerful tools in medicine, and patients deserve enough time to ask questions, understand their options, and feel genuinely cared for.
What I’m most proud of is the culture we’ve built. From the moment someone walks through our doors, we want them to feel welcomed, respected, and hopeful. Allergies can affect every part of life—from where you travel, to what you eat, to whether your child can safely attend a birthday party. Helping people regain that freedom is incredibly rewarding.
Our mission is simple: to combine cutting-edge science with genuine compassion, making Kansas City a place where patients don’t have to settle for “just living with” their allergies. We want people to know that there are more options than ever before—and that allergy care can be both highly specialized and deeply personal.
That same passion for innovation has also led me beyond the walls of my practice. I’m currently the founder of Amuse, a company developing science-based nutritional products designed to support healthy immune development in infancy. While Prairie Allergy focuses on caring for patients today, Amuse reflects my long-term interest in advancing the science of allergy and helping shape what allergy care may look like for future generations. For me, both ventures are driven by the same mission: finding better ways to help people live healthier, more confident lives.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
When I first started Prairie Allergy, I thought success would come from having the perfect plan. What I’ve learned instead is that success comes from being willing to start before everything feels perfect.
As physicians, we’re trained to wait until we have enough information to make the “right” decision. Entrepreneurship doesn’t work that way. There will always be uncertainty, and at some point you simply have to trust your preparation, make the best decision you can, and keep moving forward. Some ideas won’t work—but each one teaches you something that makes the next decision better.
I’d also encourage people to build something that genuinely reflects who they are, rather than trying to copy someone else’s success. Prairie Allergy is successful because it feels authentic to me. It reflects what I value: taking time with patients, embracing innovation, communicating honestly, and never losing sight of the human side of medicine. People can tell when a business is built with intention.
Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of the people around you. No one builds a business alone. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a supportive family, wonderful mentors, an amazing team, and patients who believed in our vision from the very beginning. Looking back, I’ve realized that relationships—not just strategy—are what make a business thrive.
