Today we’d like to introduce you to Atul Karki.
Hi Atul, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My hospitality career began at age 12 in Nepal, when I observed a well-dressed manager at a casual fine dining restaurant skillfully directing staff and ensuring smooth operations. That moment inspired me to pursue a career in hospitality.
To build my skills, I moved to Singapore for a three-year higher education program in hospitality. There, I gained hands-on experience in the fast-paced industry, working as a trainee in hotels and bars, including bartending roles. While this provided a strong foundation, I sought an academic degree rather than vocational training. After completing my studies, I returned to Nepal briefly before moving to the United States to continue my hospitality journey.
In the U.S., I earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Minnesota State University. After graduating, I joined Compass Group as an Environmental Services (EVS) Manager in Houston, Texas. I later took a break to return to Nepal and marry my fiancée, who was living in London at the time. After completing a master’s degree, I rejoined Compass Group as a Food Service Director in Emporia, Kansas, for two years. I then worked in Topeka, Kansas, for two and a half years before joining Aramark at Ford Motor Company in Kansas City.
The idea of opening my own restaurant took root years ago but gained momentum in 2024. With my wife’s support, I decided to pursue this goal. In February 2025, I left my job to focus on launching the restaurant. Construction and permitting took longer than expected, but the restaurant is now nearly ready and should open within the next few weeks.
This is the story of my journey, from a childhood inspiration in Nepal to opening a restaurant in Kansas City.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No one’s life is a smooth road. From the moment we’re born, we cry, signaling that life is inherently challenging. Obstacles are part of the journey, and in a way, they make it meaningful—smooth roads aren’t as rewarding. Jokes aside, my path in hospitality and opening a restaurant has had its share of struggles.
Moving to a new country was a significant challenge. Adapting to a different culture and proving myself at every step was tough, especially in a competitive industry like hospitality. Each role required me to learn, adjust, and demonstrate my value to progress.
Opening my own restaurant brought a new set of challenges. As an entrepreneur, I’ve had to navigate a steep learning curve, making decisions on everything from signage and plates n napkins, to marketing strategies and the overall guest experience. Coordinating these elements and getting everything done on time has been daunting. The process, especially construction and permitting, has taken over eight months and is still ongoing, though I hope to open within the next few weeks.
Despite these hurdles, I see struggles as opportunities. They push me to grow, adapt, and improve every day, even though sometimes it kames time. While challenges will continue, I believe they pave the way for future success.

I’m not much for reading books, but I’m an avid podcast listener. I immerse myself in podcasts that share life lessons and insights from successful leaders and entrepreneurs. These stories of resilience, innovation, and practical wisdom inspire me and shape how I approach my work and life. As I build Aromatic Nepal, these podcasts help me navigate the challenges of opening a restaurant and stay motivated to bring Nepali culture to the Liberty community.
