Exploring Life & Business with Amy Roberts of Lavender & Leaf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Roberts.

Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Health has always been a big part of my story. From a young age, I watched my mom walk through some difficult health issues and it had a profound impact on me – I became interested in all things health-related. I read every book I could get my hands on, experimented with different diets, and immersed myself in the alternative medical world. When I stepped into my first Biology class in college, I knew I was hooked – I even remember reading my Biology book to my roommates with the excitement of a kid on Christmas morning – though they were not as enthused. 🙂 I graduated from college with a degree in Biology, and then after a few years of working, I decided to go back to school to study holistic nutrition.

I have always loved food, but I have been equally interested in beauty/body products. When I was younger, my favorite place to go was the drugstore. I would spend hours looking at all of the makeup/body care items. I knew someday I wanted to combine my love for both – and after studying holistic nutrition, I realized that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it.

As I started swapping my beauty care products for much healthier alternatives, I was really struggling to find a natural deodorant that worked. Unfortunately, all of the ones I tried (and I tried a lot!) made me smell worse, which was not ideal! I knew there had to be a better solution. I started researching and after a lot of experimenting, I created my own. With the encouragement of my family, I decided to start my company, Lavender and Leaf, focusing on organic body products. We started with deodorant and now have lip balm, soap, oil & toner and a 3-in-1 that combines sunscreen, makeup and daily oil in one bottle. We will continue to create new products as we get feedback from customers about their needs!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think any journey is free of obstacles. It’s hard to start any business from scratch, especially when your area of expertise is not business itself. My husband jokes that I am the “Chief Product Officer”…which is true! The quality of raw materials, the creation process and the end result are of utmost importance to me. I am a bit fanatical about them. What I struggle with is I think what most people do when they’re starting a business – TIME. I have two kiddos and trying to balance work, family and play (a must) is hard. I will be the first to admit I am also not the best at managing that time. I think I am a bit unrealistically optimistic about how long a project will take. Like an Instagram post that seems easy enough will end up taking hours instead of the quick 30 minutes I planned for…ugh!

As you know, we’re big fans of Lavender & Leaf. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are an organic body care company that specializes in making safe, clean, highly effective products that do no harm. Our heart is what sets us apart from other companies. This will probably make every business-minded person cringe, but we are more concerned with making a clean product that customers love than the bottom line. We will spend extra, or do more just to ensure the quality of our products. Our goal is not to grow the company for the sake of financial gain, but to help get organic products into our customer’s hands at an affordable cost. We are also passionate about participating in the fight to end human trafficking, and 10% of all proceeds go towards organizations that are involved in that fight.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something most people may not know about me is that I love to sing and have performed in musicals/choirs since elementary school. From a business perspective, I have been working on an educational series that will be released by the end of the year. It will educate people on how to transition from a conventional lifestyle to one centered on clean living!
