Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Becker.
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Like many little kids, I grew up wanting to be a doctor, but as I got closer to college aged I started looking more broadly at careers in healthcare and a beloved English teacher suggested Physical Therapy as a good option. I instantly felt drawn to this and got a job at our local hospital working as an aide for the physical therapy department. It was absolutely everything I wanted it to be. I loved the connections that we were able to make with patients during our extended one on one time and seeing that the work made such a positive impact on peoples lives and their ability to move in the world was incredibly rewarding. I knew that this is what I was meant to do. I went into PT school with the intention of working in a hospital setting with adult patients, but that all changed with my first pediatric therapy clinical. I worked under an amazing therapist and instantly fell in love with all of the kids. Pediatrics had all of the wide ranging diagnosis and challenges that I enjoyed so much with physical therapy, but had the added bonus of using my creative side to turn therapy into an engaging game that made exercise seem more like play. That clinical was life changing in the best way and I knew I had found my place. I graduated from school and moved to Kansas City. I got my dream job right out of college at our local children’s hospital working in their outpatient clinic. I learned so much and worked along side other therapist and got a lifetimes worth of valuable knowledge. I am so grateful for it all! Throughout the time I would see families struggle to make it to appointments and kids not quite themselves in a clinic setting and frequently had families tell me that they wished I could see them at home. After 18 years of working for the hospital I felt called to start my own business and offer home visits. This allowed me more flexibility with both my treatment and personal time and allowed for a more personal relationship with kids and their families. I have seen so much difference in outcomes being able to treat kids in their on familiar surroundings of home and loved being able to incorporate things in their home to make home exercises more successful. It really has been such a game changer!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a therapist I know how to do the clinical side, but figuring out all the in’s and outs of starting a business was really difficult for me. I also can be very introverted when I am outside of my comfort zone so networking and selling myself is definitely not easy for me!!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a pediatric physical therapist that provides “in-home” therapy that can take place at home, daycare, the park or anywhere else that would be helpful. I love patients with neurological impairments and have worked with a wheelchair clinic for over 15 years, but my heart is with birth to walking patients and a majority of my patients are infants with torticollis/plagiocephaly or kiddos with developmental delays and late walkers. For the past 10-15 years I have spent much of my time and education focused on infants/toddlers with tightness in their neck or head turn preference (torticollis), flat heads (plagiocephaly), kids that struggle in tummy time and delayed toddler milestones. Addressing these issues early I have seen improvement with feeding and sleep, improved head shape without the need for a helmet, progressed developmental skills and limits/prevents future delays.
Over and over again I have seen how important early intervention is and believe that a quick check is so much better than the wait and see model. I truly love seeing babies who are not quite on track and giving the parents a few helpful tips that eases their anxiety and helps kids reach age appropriate milestones. I am genuinely invested in how all of my patients are doing. I love texting or chatting between sessions about progress or struggles and making sure families are having success. I don’t want anyone to ever worry about reaching out with questions. I truly am so energized talking about therapy!
While I am based in Overland Park, I travel within the KC Metro area including Gardner and Lee’s Summit. After the initial evaluation we will set up follow up appointments and I am always available to chat between appointments. Because I work independently, I am very flexible with days and times for scheduling and I try to have weekly slots saved for last minute evaluations allowing for short wait times for first visit. I accept some insurances, as well as cash/credit cards and HSA/FSA.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I always enjoy collaborating with other professionals. I have had so much success working along side chiropractors and lactation specialist as well as pediatricians. Everyone benefits from working together for the greater good of the patient. I am always available via call, text or email!
