Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Sipho.
Hi Amanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into skincare commenced in approximately 2016 when my son grappled with eczema. Frustrated with the limited effectiveness of prescription steroids and gels in addressing his persistent itching and cracking skin, I delved into the realm of natural compounds and their synergies. Through my research, I formulated a butter specifically for my son, aptly named “ButterSilk,” which proved remarkably effective in overcoming his eczema.
Empowered by this success, I introduced ButterSilk to local businesses and even launched a subscription box, which gained significant traction. In 2017, driven by a desire to deepen my understanding, I explored the possibility of pursuing a degree in Cosmetic Chemistry. Regrettably, local schools did not offer such programs, leading me to opt for aesthetics. After all, skincare is skincare, isn’t it?
I enrolled in school, where I excelled, but unfortunately, this took a toll on my body butter business as it demanded a significant amount of my time. During my time in school, I found a new passion for skincare, teaching classes on waxing and hydro facials. I became deeply invested in helping clients on their skincare journeys, and my expertise has been recognized by those around me.
Graduating from my program in 2018, I eagerly opened my spa suite in Lee’s Summit. However, business started slowly and faced a setback when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. To adapt, I explored alternative income streams, offering mobile waxing and facial appointments at clients’ homes and working with various spas and lash businesses. Fast forward to now (2023), and I am re-entering the scene to revitalize and expand my business.
In addition to my entrepreneurial pursuits, I am actively pursuing an instructor license in aesthetics to share my knowledge with others. On a different note, I’ve also ventured into the world of hosting a Wine Show. Shout out to Sip N’ Sniff wine on IG (sipnsniffwine)!
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating this journey has been akin to a roller coaster ride, particularly in the beginning, as a newcomer in this area, requiring a more extensive social network for support. There were moments of financial strain, teetering on the edge of surrender. Times when it seemed crucial for my marketing efforts to break through, and I grappled with the perception that others doubted my capabilities. Recognizing that I couldn’t let go of this passion and dream, I reminded myself of overcoming tougher situations in the past. Thus, I steeled myself, determined to persevere and press on.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
