Exploring Life & Business with Alex Clark of Avid Inspections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Clark.

Hi Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I bought my first house about 12 years ago and, like a lot of people, I didn’t really know what I didn’t know. I hired an inspector online and later found out they missed quite a few big-ticket items that cost me quite a bit. It was frustrating at the time, but it also planted the seed for what eventually became Avid Inspections — the idea that my inspections and reports should be as thorough as I would want if I were the one buying the house.

My background was actually in Film and Media, but I’ve always been fascinated by how things work. Even as a kid I was the one taking things apart just to see what was inside — and then having to figure out how to put it back together afterward, which was definitely the harder learning curve for me.

After owning that first home for a few years, rehabbing most of it, and learning firsthand how expensive and stressful the “surprises” can be, I started to see a real need for inspections that were clear, honest, and easy for clients to understand. Early on, I realized this isn’t just a service — it’s a major moment for families making one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, and I wanted to build something rooted in trust and communication.

A big part of where we are today has come from staying consistent and making sure every client feels informed and respected throughout the process. We’ve continued to improve our systems, our reporting, and the overall client experience so people aren’t left guessing. I’m proud of how far we’ve come, and I’m even more excited about what’s ahead as we continue to grow and serve more homeowners across the Kansas City area.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a perfectly smooth road — like most small businesses, it’s been a lot of learning as I go.

One of the biggest challenges early on was wearing every hat at once. I didn’t have any formal business training, but I had a few friends who invested heavily in seeing me succeed. Without their advice and coaching, I genuinely don’t think I would’ve made it through my first year.

And of course, that first year also happened to be the beginning of the COVID shutdowns, which came with its own set of challenges. Trying to market and build relationships during a time when meeting people was highly discouraged forced me to get creative and stay consistent, even when things felt uncertain.

Since I was starting from the ground up, I wasn’t just doing inspections— I was handling scheduling, marketing, phone calls, reporting, bookkeeping, and client follow-up. It takes time to figure out how to manage all of that while still delivering a quality inspection every time. I was also still working another job while getting Avid going

Another big challenge was learning how to grow without sacrificing standards. In this industry, it’s easy to feel pressured to move faster or do things “the way everyone else does,” but I built Avid on being thorough and honest. That means taking the time to educate clients, writing detailed reports, and making sure people truly understand what we’re seeing — and that takes real effort, especially when things get busy.

There are also the normal growing pains that come with any service business: balancing demand, managing unpredictable days, learning different construction styles and systems, and handling the occasional tough situation where clients are stressed because the inspection impacts such a major life decision.

Looking back, those struggles shaped the company in a good way. They forced me to build better systems, improve communication, and stay focused on what matters most — doing the right thing and making sure our clients feel taken care of.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Avid Inspections?
Avid Inspections is a Kansas City-based home inspection company built around one simple idea: give people the kind of inspection and report I would want if I were buying the home myself.

We provide full residential home inspections and additional services such as termite inspections, radon testing, mold testing, and sewer scopes. For many clients, it’s helpful to have those services handled by a single company so they don’t have to coordinate with multiple vendors during an already stressful process.

What we’re known for is being thorough, honest, and easy to understand. My goal isn’t just to point out problems — it’s to help clients actually understand what matters, what doesn’t, and what the realistic next steps are. Buying a home can feel overwhelming, and I take a lot of pride in helping people feel informed and confident instead of confused or pressured.

What sets us apart is the level of detail and communication. We focus heavily on clear reporting, clear photos, and taking the time to explain things in plain language. I want clients to feel like they have someone on their side, walking them through the house, not just handing them a report and disappearing.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve built Avid largely through referrals and word of mouth. That means a lot to me because trust is everything in this industry. If someone recommends us to a friend or family member, that tells me we did our job the right way.

At the end of the day, I want people to know that Avid Inspections is here to protect people from expensive surprises, help them understand the home they’re buying, and make the process a little easier. We take the work seriously — but we also believe the experience should feel helpful, respectful, and straightforward from start to finish.

What’s next?
I’m really excited about the future. The goal has never been to grow just for the sake of getting bigger — it’s to keep improving our clients’ experience and expand in a way that protects the quality and standards we’re known for.

One of my biggest priorities moving forward is continuing to build out the team and the systems behind the business so we can serve more buyers and agents without losing the thoroughness and communication Avid is built on. I want every client to feel like they’re getting the same level of attention, clarity, and respect whether they found us yesterday or have been working with us for years.

For the first few years, I did everything myself because I wanted to fully understand every part of the company before hiring and training someone else to do inspections. This past year, I hired and trained my first inspector, and now we’re a team of four. I also consistently meet with a business coach to make sure we’re growing the right way — my goal is to build something that’s still here 20 years from now.

We also plan to keep expanding and refining our additional services like sewer scopes, radon, termite, and mold testing, because I’ve seen how much easier it is for buyers and agents when they can get everything done through one trusted company.

On the brand side, I’m looking forward to building an even stronger presence in the Kansas City community, strengthening relationships with agents and local businesses, and continuing to earn referrals the right way — by doing great work and making the process easier for people.

Overall, I’m excited about steady growth, better systems, and continuing to raise the bar on what a home inspection experience should feel like. I’ve also teamed up with a programming company to create new inspection software that will make the process more seamless for both our team and our clients
