Exploring Life & Business with Aaron Washington of House Elite Sports Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Washington.

Hi Aaron, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I played Division 1 basketball here locally at UMKC and started training kids during the summers while I was still playing. I would bounce around from gym to gym until one summer I started working at a local gym just so I could have free membership and access to the gym just to train my clients.

I did that off and on for the past 10 years and was lucky enough to start training a kid at the age of 14 that happened to make it to the NBA. That’s where I really got my big break as a trainer and really propelled my access within the industry.

Since that moment, I have been blessed enough to train multiple NBA players and travel across the country doing so. Fast forward and I am now opening up my own holistic training facility and everything has come full circle. I’ve been blessed enough to play, witness, and be involved with this game at every possible level.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it’s never a smooth ride there are always pitfalls and setbacks. My journey started bouncing from gym to gym but I never saw that as a sustainable business model and actually went into the corporate world in finance for a stint that I never imagined myself doing.

Which ultimately has better prepared me for being a business owner and managing the day-to-day and employees, handling the books, budgeting, etc. A foundation I didn’t have prior to just starting out. Being an entrepreneur in itself is a constantly evolving learning curve and it’s been an incredibly humbling yet rewarding journey that I wouldn’t substitute for the world.

Every day, I wake up I’m at peace because I’m doing exactly what I love to do and having an impact on people’s lives while doing it.

As you know, we’re big fans of House Elite Sports Performance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
House Elite is a premier training facility in the Kansas City area that embodies a holistic approach to training and player development. We offer Basketball Skill Development, Strength & Conditioning, a Nutritionist, Recovery Room & a staff Sports Psychologist.

House Elite was created out of necessity, the need for a diverse training regimen all under one roof didn’t exist in Kansas City.

We offer what we call “The Program” that is split into four, 10-week sessions, each with a different developmental focus. All of our trainers on staff have had their own individual success and we all work together to bring an environment that is unmatched in terms of development.

The thing I’m most proud about is the impact that we are making in our clients’ lives not only in their sport but in life in general.

I always tell the kids I train, “No matter how good you get or become at this sport the ball is going to stop bouncing at some point & we are laying the foundation for you to not only be successful today but well after your playing career is over as well.

What were you like growing up?
I was a kid who was always kind of to himself and would beat to my own drum. Some would call me an introvert until they got to know me better and would I was an introvert/extrovert.

My interest has always lied in basketball from a very young age.

My mom often tells me a 4, I would just sit in front of the tv and watch a full basketball game and know exactly what was going on. Music is also a strong passion of mine.
