Esmeralda Lole of Kansas City on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Esmeralda Lole and have shared our conversation below.

Esmeralda, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that is brining me joy lately is the support of my mother

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Esmeralda, I am a Latina fashion designer and nail tech who loves plants and working out. I am also a wife and mother of 5. As a form of self-care, I share my plant and fitness journey through social media to connect and inspire other mothers and people who share my interest. I use my platform to speak about my community and how we can support our people.
I am currently training to compete as a powerlifter, I am hoping to compete at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother taught me the most about work. She has worked hard my whole life. I have never been without what I needed because she has sacrificed all her free time to make sure we had exactly that. Seeing her work so hard has shaped the way I work and the way I provide for my own family. I know that she worked hard for my sibling and I to be the people we want to be and my goal is to retire her with the income I make pursuing my dream and sharing my passions.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that she is beautiful and perfect the way she is. I was told at an early age by an adults around me that I wasn’t as pretty as my sister, that I needed to stop eating so much, and that I was weird. All those unkind words made me view myself in a harsh way. I was beautiful in my own way, I ate what I needed, and I was artistic and fun. Thats what I needed to hear and thats what all children need is, affirmation.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A belief that I am committed to is the treatment of brown and black people in the United States. All people should be treated with love and respect no matter their skin color and it has been such a heartbreaking experience to see the hate we go through everyday just because the color of our skin or how our families entered the United States.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop letting the fear of being perceived stop me from going after my dreams. Although I would say I have got after most of my goals, there’s so much more I could’ve done had I not cared about what others think of me.
