Daily Inspiration: Meet Zach Bauman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Bauman.

Hi Zach, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a Kansas City based commercial/editorial photographer with over a decade of experience. I use photography as a vehicle to connect with others and as a way to explore the midwest and beyond.

My photography journey started when I was a freshman in high school and I needed on elective course to fill out my schedule. My parents had an old film camera and I immediately fell in love with the photo making process. I took photography classes all through high school also shot for the yearbook as well. After high school I had several years where I didn’t pickup a camera at all and it didn’t seem as a likely career path. I finally decided to get a little digital point and shoot camera and slowly ramped up to shooting more and more and picking up enough work to try and make it work as my full-time job.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with any type of career there are highs and lows, an ongoing challenge is learning to keep up with the always evolving technology landscape and trying to learn how that can impact my business in both a positive and negative way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a commercial/editorial photographer that is probably best known for my food photography but I also shoot a lot of portrait work. I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve been able to earn a living as a full-time photographer for well over a decade. One thing that sets me apart from many other photographers is my laid back approach, I pride myself on being easy to work with while still being able to have my vision come through on whatever project I’m working on.

I really enjoy working with local businesses/restaurants to help them look their very best!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My Favorite books are mostly photography based books that I draw inspiration from, currently they are: Dan Winter’s – America – Icons & Ingenuity; Contact High – Vikki Tobak; Steak House – Eric Wareheim; Mallman on Fire – Francis Mallman

As far as apps are concerned I have a love/hate relationship with Instagram. I really like being able to keep up with other photographers and their work but I really dislike trying to figure out the algorithm and making content for the sake of making content. I have been enjoying a newer app called Foto that only focuses on still photography.
