Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Boyer.
Hi Whitney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My journey into the hair world was a little different than the stories you typically hear. I didn’t grow up with a burning desire to be a hairstylist, although I was always the friend doing everyone’s hair before an event. I even did wedding hair for a family friend before I ever had my license. The industry seemed appealing to me, sure, but I was more interested in business and making good money when I got older since I didn’t come from much.
I did love being around the industry though so I actually worked as a receptionist throughout high school. When it came time to go to a college I opted to go the more traditional route and apply to a local university. I quickly realized I wasn’t doing what I had avoided for so long. I withdrew from college and took a break and just worked and after a few months I ended up enrolling in cosmetology school.
My first year in the industry felt like it confirmed all my insecurities about joining in the first place. I was working constantly and barely scraping by financially. I later ran into a salon owner in another town I knew who said something to me that changed my career on the spot. “There are job salons, and then there are career salons.” That was it for me. I left my current salon, went and worked for her and after a few short months of hard work, my entire career shifted. I was operating as an actual business, I was making great money, I was learning SO much. Shortly, after I began educating within the salon which opened up an entirely new love for the career.
Here I am over 5 years later with such a love for the industry. I now work in the River Market renting a chair at Artistry by LB. I just moved back to the Midwest after spending three years in Houston. I currently have a home base in KC but wasn’t quite ready to let my Houston clientele go, so I travel back and forth taking guests. I am working on building my dream clientele here in Kansas City.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all. The industry can be quite the roller coaster, especially in my position where I have relocated twice and have had to rebuild. It’s such a humbling experience being where you feel like is “the top” and then have to restart. It poses its challenges of course, but it’s a chance to build a dream clientele all over again.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a color specialist that also provides detailed haircuts based on our color story. I strive to create unique, low-maintenance, expensive-looking hair.
I feel like, for me, it’s not only giving the client what they want, but also directing the client towards a look and style that suits not only their appearance, but their lifestyle, that’s important.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I bought my first house with my husband at the age of 23 and it was a total remodel. If I didn’t do hair I would love to buy and flip homes.
