Daily Inspiration: Meet Tammy Ball

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Ball.

Hi Tammy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with the Kearney Food Pantry began in 2017 as a volunteer. What started as a desire to serve my community quickly grew into a deeper commitment to the organization and the families we support. As I became more involved, I was invited to serve on the Board of Directors, which gave me an even greater understanding of the challenges facing our neighbors and the opportunities we had to make a meaningful difference.

In 2022, when the Pantry’s director resigned, the board approached me about stepping into the role. Without hesitation, I accepted. Through my work at the Pantry, I have had the privilege of hearing countless stories from individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. Those conversations reinforced my belief that addressing food insecurity is only one piece of the puzzle. We needed to connect people with resources that could help them overcome barriers and create lasting stability in their lives.

Whether it is assistance with a utility bill, helping cover a car repair so someone can get to work, providing support with resumes and job applications, or offering educational opportunities such as canning classes to help families build self-sufficiency, our goal is to provide more than just food. We strive to empower our neighbors with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

In 2025, I was honored to be named Citizen of the Year. While I gratefully accepted the award, I truly view it as a reflection of the incredible volunteers, donors, board members, and community partners who make our work possible. Most recently, the Kearney Food Pantry was nominated for the Biggest Community Impact Award. Although we did not receive the award, being recognized among so many outstanding organizations was an honor and a testament to the collective effort of a caring community.

Looking back, I never imagined that volunteering at the Pantry would lead me to where I am today. What continues to inspire me is seeing what can happen when a community comes together to support one another and create opportunities for families to thrive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it certainly has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been meeting the growing need in our community while facing rising food costs and limited resources. Providing food and support for approximately 300 families each month requires careful planning, strong community partnerships, and ongoing fundraising efforts.

Another challenge has been securing funding through grants. While grants are an important resource, competition is extremely high, and there are far more worthy organizations applying than there are funds available. This means we must continually seek new opportunities and build strong relationships with donors, businesses, and community partners to sustain our programs.

There have also been challenges in addressing the complex needs of the families we serve. Food assistance is often just one part of a larger situation involving housing, transportation, utilities, employment, or healthcare. Finding ways to connect families with resources and support while operating with limited staff and volunteer capacity can be difficult.

However, these challenges have also been some of our greatest opportunities for growth. They have pushed us to be creative, strengthen community partnerships, and continually look for new ways to serve our neighbors more effectively. Every obstacle we’ve faced has reinforced the importance of our mission and the incredible generosity of the community that supports it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The Kearney Food Pantry exists to help neighbors in need by providing food assistance, resources, and support during difficult times. While food distribution is the foundation of what we do, our mission extends beyond simply providing meals. We strive to connect individuals and families with resources that can help them overcome challenges and build long-term stability.

I believe we are known for treating every person who walks through our doors with dignity, compassion, and respect. Anyone can experience hardship, and we want our neighbors to know they will be welcomed without judgment. Our volunteers take the time to listen, offer encouragement, and help connect families with additional resources whenever possible.

What I am most proud of is the culture we have built. Our pantry is powered by dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and a community that genuinely cares about its neighbors. Together, we have created an environment where people feel valued, supported, and hopeful.

What sets us apart is our commitment to seeing the person behind the need. We do not just provide food; we work to understand each family’s unique situation and help identify solutions that can make a lasting impact. Whether that means connecting someone with utility assistance, transportation resources, employment support, or educational opportunities, we believe in helping people move forward while preserving their dignity every step of the way.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is being a bright spot in someone’s difficult day. Life can be challenging, and many of the people we serve are carrying burdens that others may never see. A kind word, a listening ear, a helping hand, or simply treating someone with dignity and respect can make a tremendous difference.

I believe that every person deserves to feel valued and cared for, regardless of their circumstances. While we may not be able to solve every problem a person is facing, we can offer hope, encouragement, and support during a difficult time. Sometimes knowing that someone cares is enough to help a person take the next step forward.

That is why I am passionate about the work we do at the Kearney Food Pantry. It is not just about providing food; it is about building connections, restoring hope, and reminding people that they are not alone. If we can make a difficult day a little more manageable for someone, then we have made a meaningful difference.

This belief guides everything I do, both personally and professionally.
