Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabri Dickson.
Hi Tabri, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My pottery journey started as an empty nest/self care hobby. My daughter went out of state for college, which was much harder than I expected. My Pops was in failing health and moved in with us, because he was unable to care for himself. It was 2 hours a week just for me. I found a lot of comfort in making something functional and beautiful out of mud.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pottery is not easy. It takes a lot of practice. In the beginning there are way more failures than successes.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love to make functional pottery. I can’t imagine any better than eating, drinking, or cooking with a beautiful piece of art. What I am most proud of are my vulva mugs. I made one as a joke for my youngest sister, Tessa. I made a few, and figured maybe people would buy them as gag gifts. I have a hard time keeping them in stock. It really makes me happy, that women find them empowering.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I found a wonderful member studio in North Kansas City. The owner is very knowledgeable, happy to help and excited to teach. It is a very cooperative environment. The members are very encouraging, I love to be able to show a piece to the person on the wheel next to me and get a suggestion or an opinion. I have considered getting a wheel for my home studio, but I would miss the collaboration I get with the other members.
