Today we’d like to introduce you to Sniffy Tugboat
Hi Sniffy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mom taught my sister and I to crochet when we were little. I thought it was boring, making long lengths of chain stitches. When I was a senior in high school, I found crocheting again on YouTube. I searched our childhood craft supplies and found some acrylic yarn and the same hook Mom had tried to teach me with when I was a little kid. I started watching YouTube tutorials and making little amigurumi figures. Then I found a blog that had free written amigurumi patterns to make Pokémon plushies, so I learned to read patterns through making those. After years of making things from other people’s patterns, I started branching out and writing down my own patterns as I constructed my own crochet creations. I’ve never found anything as fulfilling as being able to make something physical from an idea and to see that creation form row by row.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Crocheting has been my constant since I learned it. Like following a powerful, invisible beam, crochet could be my path when things did get rough or when I was struggling in my life. It’s a motivator and an inspiration, a gift and a treasure.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in crochet items for the home and for yourself. I like making things that range in utility, from wine bottle carriers and cotton washcloths to earrings and Among Us plushies. I’m trying to branch into more décor items that use more esoteric mediums, like tubing and strip lighting. I’m most proud of making something that can make someone’s life better, be it through utility or aesthetic. I’m not sure what sets me apart from other fiber artists. I’m sure that if there are differences, they will be apparent to those who see my work.
What’s next?
I’m hoping to get more of my work out and into the public. I’ve been trying to apply for more vendor events at festivals and fairs in the state. I hope to also get word of my work out online more. My main plan is to keep crocheting and getting better so I can make more and better things. I hope one day to start making walk-around character costumes and wearing them to events.
