Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Oakes.
Hi Samantha , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Tattooing while I was working in a Pediatric Emergency Room in Tulsa, OK. I needed something to cop with the trauma I was enduring while working such a taxing job. I decide to move back to Kansas City in 2019 and continued to tattoo in my free time. As the pandemic came into full blast- I was tattooing a lot more as everyone had a lot of extra time. I would work in a nurses office in St Joe from 3am to 11am then come back to Kansas city and tattoo the rest of the day. I worked many jobs to support this hobby of mine until my hobby started to support me. I shortly realized that I could not work another job and tattoo. In 2021 I started my professional tattoo career and began working in a tattoo shop and taking clients full time. In 2022 I was offered a job in a private luxury tattoo studio working with some of the best artists I had ever seen in my short career so far. There I learned many of the skills I utilize today and really started to have break through in my career in the tattoo industry. I started to learn how to manage my finances as an entrepreneur, prioritize my taxes and living to a standard of living Im proud of- mentally, emotionally, and physically. Despite the growth I was facing- My mental health took a large toll on me in 2023 where I faced some very trying times and ultimately made the decision to move forward with opening my own private studio in the crossroads of Kansas City. Buisness ownership is nothing short of amazing and challenging but I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by a steadfast group of people that have supported all of my craziest dreams! Fast forward to today- and my wife and I are in the works of opening up a second private studio in Osawatomie, KS along with a full retail space of Vintage clothing and coffee.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel I answered a little bit of this in the last prompt but no it has not been. I did not come from a place that I learned how to self sustain myself very well. Although had my grandparents whom poured their heart and soul into me and truly shaped the young woman I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in black and grey and truly enjoy geometrical- abstract black work- and floral. I have been someone that people come to for fine line, delicate floral and strong black work. I am most proud of the projects I have made in the midst of the chaos in my own mind. Art truly gives me an outlet to stop time. I get to connect with my clients and make something beautiful that they, and myself, will cherish forever.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I used to fish with my grandpa and once we went trout fishing in South Fork, Colorado and I outfished him despite him being as close to pro as they come.
