Daily Inspiration: Meet Samantha Klinger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Klinger

Hi SAMANTHA, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After the loss of my older brother at 29 years old, who passed in a car accident in 2010, I decided to leave traditional college and enroll in cosmetology school. In 2012 when I finished school and started my career behind the chair I struggled to feel at home in a salon setting and my mentor encouraged me to go out on my own in a suite type setting and Vol Libre Salon became official in April 2013. Over the 11 plus years of ownership I have learned many lessons- both good and bad, offered varying service options and grown both personally and professionally. What started as a needed change of pace for a 22 year old has grown into a thriving salon with an amazing collection of artist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I understood the hair side and although as a very young and fresh hairstylist I had to learn and grow, having no idea what I was actually doing from a business stand point has been the hardest part of the journey. I have tried to allow my salon to grow organically but with that came lessons of learning taxes, book keeping, retail and how to be a leader to a team. I am so beyond thankful that I have an amazing support system and have had some amazing artists who have called Vol Libre Salon their home.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Since the beginning of my career I have gravitated toward color. This was an easy transition from the painting and drawing I’ve always had as a hobby. At this stage of my career I feel I’m most known for corrective colors and grey blending. I love the complexity of those types of services, the use of so many skills I’ve worked hard to grow over the last 12 years and the joy my clients feel when we get them to a place where they love their hair. I think often times its more than just the hair- its the connection, the conversations and the ability to feel refreshed in an artists chair that I hope we give to each client.

When it comes to my professional life I’m most proud of the space I’ve created. I’ve strived to provide a welcoming salon that also gives artists benefits above what most of our industry offers. I want to elevate our profession, create ways for young artists to blossom in safe salons and to teach and be taught by the other artists.

My drive, I love to prove people wrong – I’ve continued to push myself and those around me.

What matters most to you?
My husband and my kids. They are the whole reason all of this is worth it, and they bring me the most joy.
Being a young and single mom, owning my own salon allowed me to provide for them and still attend so many class parties, school field trips and after-school activities. I try my best to be present but also show our kids through the salon what hard work and dedication can get you.
