Today we’d like to introduce you to Princess Collins.
Hi Princess, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As early as five years old, my Mothers shop was my second home. Watching her do what she loved inspired me to pursue hairstyling at the age of seven, I started requesting “Bratz” and “Barbie” doll heads for gifts to practice new styles and techniques. When I was nine years old my mom purchased a professional mannequin head for me because I started to show interest in using heated styling tools and coloring hair with leftover products that she didn’t use. By the age of 14, I expressed to her the passion I had developed for the hair industry and she didn’t waste a moment, by the next week I had my very own “station” to do hair in the basement of our home. I started taking clients my 8th grade year of middle school, installing extensions for my peers and the word spread quickly. At 16 years old, I had my own clientele, I did hair almost everyday after school and all weekend long. I was given the opportunity to work in a shop at 17 years old, I ended up graduating high school a year early to take on my dream to be a licensed cosmetologist. I had a few setbacks, but my biggest two were the death of my parents in late 2018, I lost my mother and in early 2020 my father passed away. I felt discouraged and honestly lost my love for hair. My grandmother and aunt were adamant about me going back to school so I could get my license, they would constantly remind me that was the only thing my mom asked of me. I put my feelings of depression and doubt behind me and went back to school November 2020. July of 2021, I finished Cosmetology school and by October 2021, I received my Cosmetology license. As of now, I am continuing my craft professionally as a licensed cosmetologist and I can’t wait to see what opportunities that God has in store for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My greatest setback was having to go through seeing my mother grow sick over the years and end up passing away at the young age of 46. After my mom passed, my dad Commit Suicide a year and a half later. I felt like I couldn’t take it and went into a dark place in my life. I gave up on my dream career for almost a year and felt discouraged that my parents wouldn’t be able to see me succeed or even be here to see me live my life, start a family of my own, or just be around. There’s nothing like being able to call my mom or dad. They were really like my best friends.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist. My specialty is in hair extensions and hair coloring. Yet, I am most proud of the relationships I have formed over the years with different people. Hair is my first love but people are my passion. When I finish a client, the most rewarding feeling is the feeling as if they can take on the day with confidence and happiness all by just doing what I love to do. Everyone has their own special quality and I believe mine is making people feel comfortable and cared for when they sit in my chair I always make it a mission to not let them leave my chair until they are satisfied with their hair and my customer service.
How do you think about luck?
I grew up in a very spiritual family and without God, Faith, and hard work I wouldn’t have made it here. I personally feel like our lives are predestined, and it’s up to us to pursue our dreams and visions. I feel with perseverance and patience anything is possible.
