Daily Inspiration: Meet Nadou Lawson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadou Lawson.

Hi Nadou, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! My name is Nadou, and I am originally from Togo, a tony country in West Africa. I moved here in 2011 to continue my studies and be with family. I have always been into scents; I can remember how you smelled when I first meet you better than I can remember your face. I thought that was weird, but turns out it’s pretty normal. Candles is one way I enjoy different scents and figured how different scents can affect my mood. Lavender or eucalyptus for example can help me go to sleep and breathe better. I have always wanted to be a business owner since watching my mom raise my 5 siblings and I all on her own while owning a construction materials business. Last year was when I decided to go from making candles as a hobby to wanting to build a business out of it. Different scents remind people of different memories, events, people, and more. I want to make home goods that smell good, put you in a specific mood, and overall make people feel good. I also wanted my business to relate to my personality, so being an introvert I incorporated that into my product names and hope other introverts and homebodies can enjoy them too.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have learned a lot along the way, and although I have only been in business since August of this year, I have been working on my products for months prior to launching. It takes a lot of testing. and trials to find the right ingredients to make my products. I enjoyed every minute of it, and it’s made me a better business owner. Things can be frustrating at times, but with the support of my family, I was able to get through the hard times and learn from it. Nothing is easy in life and you have to work hard for everything you want, so I am really grateful for this chapter of my life and embrace to good and the bad with open arms.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an IT developer by day, but candle-making is where I get creative and play with my creative side. Being an introvert, home is where you will find me 90% of the time. I make candles, room/linen sprays, and wax melts for the homebody to enjoy. Though my candle names are inspired by introverted feelings, anyone can enjoy them in their home or personal space. I am very proud of becoming a business owner, as it has always been a dream of mine to turn something that I love into a craft that others can enjoy. I use ingredients sourced sustainably, and free of toxic chemicals so you can not only improve your mood with the different scents I offer, but also that it’s made with the best ingredients.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is going to visit my mom at work after school! I loved watching her being a boss and handling her business. The way she interacted with her customers, and knew her business in and out was truly cool to watch.
