Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa McFall.
Hi Melissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always felt called to help people. After college I had jobs in marketing and sales and none of them felt right. I even had a job working with special needs adults which I loved but I knew that wouldn’t always be my career path either. I was blessed to be able to stay home with my boys until they went to school, and then I knew it was time to find something that really fit. Last year my youngest started Kindergarten and I was ready to start a new chapter. They day school started my dad was put in ICU and we would later find out he had late stage ALS. So that fall was spent taking care of him, getting his affairs in order and spending as much time with him as I could until he passed away in December. During that time he told me that he knew I was meant to help people and I should lean into that for my next chapter. I told him about color analysis and he smiled and said, “I think you found your calling”. So the spring 2025 I went to Utah to became a certified color analyst through Global Color Analysis and I hit the ground running as soon as I got back to Kansas City and have been loving it every since. I have been to boutiques and shops in Hays, Hoxie and Scott City Kansas. I was also just a part of Tea Ella’s Fall Event here in Overland Park. I have a mobile station so I have really enjoyed being welcomed into client’s homes for girl’s nights.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think there are always struggles when starting any business. I had to decide how to look at them so I decided that they were simply learning opportunities and I could do differently moving forward. At one event I traveled out of town to be at, there were a few last minute cancellations. I learned that I needed to collect a deposit that was nonrefundable if there was a cancellation within 24 hours. My time is valuable and it is okay to set expectations. Honestly, the only other struggle has been my website/system, I am not tech savvy so it has been a journey learning all the things. I have had only a couple of negative comments about my business in general but was surprised how easily I let them roll of my back since I know this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in personal color analysis, helping clients discover the tones, shades and combinations that bring out their natural beauty and confidence. I am know for my warm approachable style and my ability to make people feel seen and understood. Whether it is guiding someone to the perfect hair color, wardrobe palette or make up shades, I focus on creating results that feel authentic and effortless. My goal is to help each person look and feel like the best version of themselves – natural, radiant, and completely at ease in their own skin. The system I am certified in has 22 seasons so each season is extremely detailed to each person. Everyone has over 100 colors in their palette so there are still plenty for everyone. I am most proud of seeing the smile on clients faces when we have the “A-ha” moment during their analysis when we find their season and everything falls into place. My children are extremely proud of me and my success and I did not realize how much that would mean to me when I first started. I am currently taking a course to become certified as a closet organizer to add to my list of services. Cleaning out your closet is one of the most overwhelming and overdue tasks in your home and after a color season is discovered I can help get it in order with systems in place to make the organization maintainable. As for what sets me apart from others is that I can come to clients so our sessions have a comfortable feel to them.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I would say ski trips with my dad. He had a condo in Colorado so we had a place that holds so many memories and now I get to share that place with my own children. When we would go skiing my dad would challenge me to get better. It may have been frustrating at the time but definitely worth it at the end. He knew I was capable of things before I did and boy was I proud when I accomplished them. I thought I was the only 7 year old on the planet who ever did a black run before, and no one could burst my happy bubble. He would also go through the kiddie forts with us (which is actually hard as an adult), and it would end in lots of laughs because it didn’t always go smoothly. We would als play games there and have s’mores. In the Summer we would go out to Colorado as well and the colors out there still amaze me every time I go. It was the first time I realized how much beauty is in color.
