Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilee Rose.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
If we are talking about my current endeavor – Superposition Stays (short-term rental company) then what had happened was…I bought a house in my hometown of Iola, KS back in January of 2022. I lived in Kansas City at the time, but wanted a relaxing home away from the city and a place to stay when visiting family and friends. I also met my partner, Tyler around the same time. I rented it for a few months to my niece, but when that wasn’t working out, I decided I should Airbnb it when I wasn’t in town, as it was not my primary residence. I told Tyler my wishes to turn this 3 bed, 2 bath home on 2.5 acres into a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city with chickens and all! The rest is history.
That was 4 years ago, and our portfolio has grown to 14 with locations in Iola and Lawrence, KS since the success we achieved with our first baby, Rose Ranch. Our newest short-term rentals/Airbnb’s are a collection of themed suites located in the New Hampshire Lofts building one block from Mass St. in Lawrence. We are currently working on 7 lofts, each inspired by gems and stones – The Dreamstone Suites. We are right across the street from Maceli’s, which is a beautiful venue for wedding receptions, parties, meetings, with excellent food and service. We are excited to welcome their clients as we are currently working on our biggest loft; Diamond – a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom Bridal Suite that will debut by mid April, 2026.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Great Question! It’s been a little of both. It was smooth because with my eye for design, photography skills, and vision paired with Tyler’s financial support, hard work, and never give up attitude – we were able to create beautiful and cozy spaces that people really enjoy! Creating spaces and setting the vibe is really something we enjoy, so it can feel less like work, and more like fun. 🙂
The struggles we’ve endured are the occasional bad guest, problems out our control (think plumbing issues, frozen pipes), and delays in construction that caused a lot of stress. Working together full time on a business has also put a strain on our romantic relationship, do not recommend…
Lol 🥲😬
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been an artist at heart and traveling is one of my favorite things ever! Where you end up staying on your travels is very important. I’ve done a lot of my own research as I love staying in unique Airbnb’s and boutique hotels. So this business has really been an exciting adventure and has allowed me to shine and bring forth my ideas and visions to life. Tyler and I find it very rewarding to take an idea and transform it into something real and magical. We also love a good before and after project. We work fast and efficiently, so we are able to get a lot of work done in a short amount of time.
Being comfortable is really important to me. You will always find everything you need in our spaces to feel right at home. Lots of blankets, all your cooking supplies, extra towels, pet supplies, lots of low lights and lamps, sound machines, oil diffusers, decent speakers for music, and luxurious linens and beds. I also love to collect vintage art and furniture, so my style is unique. You aren’t getting a typical cookie cutter experience in any of our rentals. I would maybe describe it as “Bougie Granny Boho.”😂 Luxury mixed with Grandma vibes.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My partner Tyler is more of the risk-taker. When we were approached to rent all 8 units of a new building project, we were quite scared. It is A LOT of liability and money, but we decided if anyone can do it, WE can! Tyler always perseveres and will not give up until we succeed. We had always worked on one project at a time before, so creating multiple spaces at the same time has been a huge undertaking and a massive amount of work. We are really hoping to get the word out there about our unique spaces and making Lawrence, KS a premier destination.
Personally, my design style is a little risky. I don’t always do what’s “safe.” The first loft we completed for this project in the Dreamstone Suites collection is an all pink Rose Quartz theme. When I say all pink – I mean it, right down to the silverware, coffee maker, cookware, furniture, everything! Having an all pink airbnb is a little risky as it may only appeal to a certain audience. I’m happy to report though, a couple of guy friends coming into town for a beer festival still really enjoyed it! I also like older items over brand new items. I like the character of something you’d find in your grandma’s house. Hehe.
