Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Keever.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Honestly, taking photos was just an interest. Growing up, all the girlfriends would get together and do our little photoshoots. Come my high school graduation, 11 years ago, I was gifted my step-father’s camera and somehow never gave it up. Summer of 2021 I decided to really turn this passion into a business and it has continued to grow since then. Last July, I quit my 9-5 to pursue this full time and we’ve ran with it full speed, no looking back since. I published a book, won an award (NextGen Under 30 in KS) and just continued the hustle.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh gosh no. From 2015 to 2021 there was a lot of “starting a business” and then giving it up. A lot of back n forth. But I continued to come back to it. We’ve been going strong since 2021, getting a studio space, getting into weddings. Going full time and really taking that leap has been the biggest stressor, honestly. There’s slow seasons that really make you question if you’re going to make it through. And the busy season, especially as a mother of 3 and wife, can make you question if you’re cut out for this. Comparison is truly a thief and has you sometimes questioning your own worth in the industry. The struggles come both mentally and physically. Yet, the pay off of my incredible clients make it worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a lifestyle photographer. I don’t really have a niche. I average 20-ish weddings per year. While also keeping a full schedule of families, seniors, couples, newborns and boudoir. I’m definitely known for my professional-ish-ism. Ha. I like to be my full authentic self with my clients. I have found the more real and genuine I am, the closer to true emotion can be captured. I think if you asked my clients what I’m known for it’s my quick and painless sessions with the same energy in turn around time of getting galleries back out. I’m just impatient, so we waste no time. I genuinely love what I do. Not everyone can say that. I feel beyond grateful to have a successful business built from nothing that brings not just myself, but so many others joy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck? I think I am where I am due to my commitment and work ethic. Doing the work to get my name out there. Doing the work to find and maintain my clientele. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to get here. I guess the luck is the chance I took on myself to make this dream a reality. And the luck of having the people I do in my life that continue to push and support me.
