Daily Inspiration: Meet Keely Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keely Gilbert.

Hi Keely, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For many years I’ve had the desire to have a creative outlet in my personal or professional life, but it’s looked a little different in each season.

Six years ago, I was at a turning point in my career, so I took a leap of faith and started a woodworking/calligraphy business called Adorned Decor. Adorned means to make beautiful, which was a perfect description for what I wanted to do- make beautiful decor that can bless people’s homes, weddings, and life. For a few years, I spent my day’s lettering and making signs from scratch, teaching myself how to use power tools, painting signs, and figuring out how to grow my small business out of my garage. Sadly, I needed to close up shop for some personal reasons but still wanted to use my creativity and platform built through social media. During this transition, I worked as a social media and content planner for a local clothing boutique in KC. Working there is what really started to grow my love for fashion and the blogging/influencer world. I got first-hand experience working with local creatives, planning events, networking, and learning the ins and outs of social media.

In 2016, while working at the boutique, my husband and I wanted to start growing our family. It took a few months before we got our first positive pregnancy test. Shortly after finding out the exciting news, we lost our baby to miscarriage in April 2017. Just two months later, we found out we were pregnant again but sadly lost that baby as well. It was a long and hard year full of grieving and healing before we were ready to start trying again. I used that year to heal, process, and use my story to help others. I was an open book on social media with my miscarriage and grief journey, which opened up my connections even more to others experiencing the same devastation. In the spring of 2018, we found out we were pregnant for the third time. We had passed some milestones and saw the heartbeat of our precious baby. Excitement and relief grew as we shared our news, started buying baby items, and preparing to have our rainbow baby.

Devastation came when our baby’s heart stopped beating—another loss. Three babies were born to heaven in 15 months. After that loss, I felt a calling to use our story to help others, so the Adorned Life blog was born. I wanted to use what I had built with Adorned Decor but change the name to encompass more of my life outside of making and selling décor. Sharing the loss of our Lily, Levi, and Emily was the heartbeat of Adorned Life, as my blog was a place for those to come to learn about miscarriage and how they can support friends or family walking that same road. But I had bigger dreams and goals to use this website to share life, fashion, DIY, and hopefully, one day, share motherhood and how beautiful all of that is- mess and all.

I spent a year blogging about our miscarriage journey before welcoming our rainbow baby, Emmaline, into the world. I took a year off from blogging to focus on learning the ropes of motherhood, balancing working part-time from home, navigating postpartum anxiety and depression, and just enjoying the blessing of our precious miracle baby. While taking a year off from blogging, my creative desires were burning inside me to do something, so I started moving towards sharing more of my life on social media. I shared the things I love: fashion, all things baby, and décor. Sharing all these things and my followers’ growing interest in what I was sharing led me to have an influencer platform. The last year has been an absolute blast connecting with local businesses, influencers, and growing relationships on social media.

I currently spend my days chasing around a toddler and working part-time for a local non-profit. Then whatever time and energy is left, I spend making connections, attending events, sharing products that I’m loving and using, and updating our new home. Each day is different, and it often feels chaotic, but I love the challenge and creativity it brings to my life.

I’m not sure where the Adorned Life will go, but while I wait to watch it unfold, I’ll continue to share the things I love and show the beauty in the everyday. My hope and prayers are that when someone comes across my page or blog, it will meet them where they are, encourage them, bring them to something they would enjoy, and show how beauty can come from the messiest times.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have faced several challenges to get us where we are at today. But I’d say that currently, my biggest challenge is trying to balance everything. Being a stay-at-home and work-from-home mom. I usually work for my job and my own personal platform during nap times, which leaves the nights with catching up on housework, cleaning up the mess from my busy and active toddler, and anything else I didn’t get to that day. It can be a lot to handle some days, but I’m really loving this season of life and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I get the best of both worlds by being able to stay home with my daughter and also work to help provide an income.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My mission and purpose behind being an influencer and sharing my life on social media is to connect with others and help them find beauty in the everyday. Whether that’s sharing a blog post a reader connects with, a new business or product I’m loving, affordable fashion and home decor, or a DIY project I recently tried. It brings me so much joy when I get to connect with my followers or when something I share resonates with them.

There are times that I share content or products that lead to a commission, so I like to be upfront about that with everyone. But more often than not, I share a product or business just because I love it and want others to know about it too! That will always be the heartbeat of what I do and what I share.

My absolute favorite thing about this gig is getting to connect with others, so come come hi!
