Daily Inspiration: Meet JW Goodwin

Today we’d like to introduce you to JW Goodwin.

Hi JW, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For me, basketball isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. Spending years running pickup games across local gyms and connecting with ballers across the region made one thing crystal clear: our area was overflowing with real talent. Whether it was young guys fresh out of high school and college or season-tested OGs who still have plenty left in the tank, players needed a structured, high-level league to lock in and test their game. That’s why I launched The JG League—to build a premier stage where our entire basketball community can keep competing, stay connected, and get a taste of the spotlight.

Starting out wasn’t easy. Getting the word out to players and locking down gym venues were my biggest initial hurdles. Finding facilities that can accommodate game schedules takes continuous effort, and launching the league meant taking a major risk—investing my own money, buying media gear from scratch, and committing to venue fees with only 4 initial teams to start and no guaranteed return. But taking that leap was necessary, and by keeping the focus entirely on the player experience, the league took off.

Today, as of Season 10, we’ve grown to 18 teams operating as a premier adult coed basketball league across Missouri—including Carthage, Webb City, Nevada, and Joplin—and Columbus, Kansas. Carthage is currently our main location, running four times annually and featuring two simultaneous leagues running side by side—casual hoopers on one and college level skill on the other. I run the league top-to-bottom and handle all the production personally: setting up cameras every game day to film full games, editing individual player highlights for social media, and tracking stats, leaderboards, standings and more. It demands countless hours and constant driving between locations, but seeing the community thrive and keeping the game alive makes every single mile worth it.

I couldn’t have pulled this off alone, though. My wife’s support has been my absolute anchor from day one. Truth is, this league wouldn’t be anywhere near where it is today without her, the incredible facility staff, our team’s business sponsors, all the fans, baller family and every single player who shows out and keeps this league electric.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been without its challenges. From hustling for gym venues to spreading the word to players, every single step was a challenge worth taking. Today, the momentum is unreal. Local businesses are stepping up in a huge way through our new sponsorship packages. That community backing is fueling our growth, opening doors to new venues, and ensuring this league remains a powerhouse in local hoops for generations to come.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What truly sets me apart is my obsession with quality and player experience. I treat local basketball like the big leagues—capturing full game film, dropping personalized player highlights, and tracking every single stat. I’m fully committed to bringing unmatched energy, high-level competition, and pure passion back to local runs, giving players an unmatched stage to test their game and build lasting memories.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Taking that leap of faith was everything. Going all-in, funding the whole operation myself with zero safety net—was a huge risk, but betting on myself paid off. I’m deeply humbled and proud to see where this league stands today. My goal now is to keep this momentum surging—making the league bigger, better, and higher-level every single season so that every player, sponsor, fan, and family member involved can look back years from now with incredible memories of what we built together.
