Daily Inspiration: Meet Julie Pickering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Pickering.

Hi Julie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up around horses and knew early on that a job in the horse industry would be my career path. I attended William Woods University in Fulton, MO and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Equestrian Science. I moved to the Kansas City area right after college in 2002. I worked for a barn in Lenexa for two years and then opened my own business in 2004. I built my business from the ground up, starting off with just a few clients to what is now a 30 horse facility with 60 plus students. We travel to national-level competitions all over the country.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some struggles I have had along the way have been finding an appropriate facility to operate out of, finding a good work-life balance which is something I think a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with, and navigating Covid last year.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I train horses in the sport of hunter/jumper, teach people to ride horses and to compete, and board horses at our facility. I specialize in hunt seat which is a type of English riding. I am most proud to see my horses and students competing successfully on a national stage. What sets me apart from others is putting the horse first in all we do and also, I believe in my work ethic.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
There are many, but one that stands out is the surprise of a horse for my 10th birthday. My parents had a scavenger hunt with clues that led to me finding “Pootsie,” a beautiful palomino mare! I was completely surprised and overwhelmed with joy!
