Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Lorusso
Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a native of Chicago and studied formally at the American Academy of Art. I completed my degree at the Kansas City Art Institute. I was recruited to work for Hallmark Cards in 1988 which brought me to Kansas City. I left my job as an artist for Hallmark in 1999 and have been a working gallery artist ever since. In the mid 90’s I was accepted into my first gallery in Scottsdale Arizona, my career grew from there. I now am represented my many galleries across the country and oversees.
I briefly taught classes in the illustration department at the Kansas City Art Institute and now teach an annual weekly class at the Scottsdale Artists School. Last year I launched my online course called mastering Your Artists Voice where I show how I approach painting soup to nuts.
I’ve had articles in all of the major art publications including American Art Collector and Fine Art Connoisseur and have just completed a one man exhibition at McLarry Fine Art in Santa Fe New Mexico.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While Ive been very blessed to have had the career I have, It requires a lot of hard work and determination. I learned along the way how important it is to treat your career as a business, which required me to pick up some business experience along the way.
Getting up in the morning with the passion to create as your job is a luxury, and to be able to make a living at it is fortunate obviously. Ive learned to be resilient along the way as rejection is part of this industry. I am lucky that I have grown a group of collectors who enjoy my work and continue to appreciate it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I primarily paint scenes in oil paint in a painterly realistic style. The scenes I’m known for are romantic or contemplative scenes. I paint images that reflect our human experience, usually my scenes are places or situations that most of us either have or would like to experience.
My style of work is fairly recognizable, which has helped me establish as sort of brand, collectors can usually tell if a painting is made by me. My work has been called nostalgic however I like to refer to it as timeless.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Many changes have occurred in art, primarily with the advent of AI. I’d like to think that man made work will be distinctive and set apart from something machine made.
The great thing about art is that thee really are no limits to what can be imagined, so sky’s the limit. I tell you artists that they are living in an amazing time as social media has opened up the art field to more people than any great master could’ve ever imagined in her day.
