Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan and Sasha Marcotte. Them and their team share their story with us below:
We met back in 2013 when Jordan was playing an event at Sasha’s parent’s home. Sasha was in town visiting from her time studying in Hawaii. She had just started songwriting and her mom somehow convinced her to share one of her songs. After she sang, Jordan was hooked. Days later, Sasha flew back to Hawaii and for the next six months, Jordan made attempts at getting to know her from afar.
After she moved back, mutual friends were getting married and so Jordan asked Sasha if she’d write and perform a custom first-dance song for the couple. This got us in the same room together which is all Jordan really cared about. After writing it and performing it we took it to the studio to record it which was an easy way to keep us – in the same room.
After some time, our mutual interest grew in one another and we started dating. Music remained a consistent medium for us to connect and enjoy together.
In 2015 we got engaged (for the first time). It wasn’t but 30 days later that we booked it off. As much as we loved each other, there were just things in our hearts that we knew we needed to get right. No one will ever be perfect and a partner can never live up to a perfect standard but we did believe that we could individually address some issues before committing to forever.
We both went our separate ways. Sasha went off to Orange County and Jordan remained in Kansas City for another couple of years. But in 2017, he moved to Los Angeles. During the Spring of 2017, we were able to reconnect in California. Time apart and even time away from Kansas City was healthy for us.
After reconnecting in April, we got engaged (for the second time) in September in West Hollywood.
It wasn’t long after that we moved back to Kansas City to get married in March of 2018. During our time in CA, we created our music duo together and just started “going for it”. We had no idea what we were doing but we were glad to be making music together again.
Since being married, we’ve traveled all around performing for all kinds of audiences. Music is something we feel passionate about and responsible for. We haven’t been through the most but we’ve been through enough to know that people need encouragement and hope. We try and drench our songs with that in mind.
Below is an official bio:
In the physiological sense, the word ‘soul’ is used to characterize the part of us that is essential to our emotions and spirituality. As a genre, it’s defined as the “music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm and blues” (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, 1989). For Jordan and Sasha Marcotte, it is the term that embodies the emotional transparency in the music they compose and perform together in the group that shares their last name.
What MARCOTTE has forged together is evident not only in the songs they’ve created but in their delivery as well. Whether in their plans to ramp up live shows or their commitment to including their children in the recording and traveling processes (ten-month-old Emalia is about to log flight #18), the pair has successfully translated the honesty and affection that characterizes their partnership into the art they create together.
On the brink of their debut release Good For My Soul, produced with Logan Murphy, MARCOTTE has no intentions of slowing down. In this six-track EP, the soul-pop duo has captured the intimacy and clarity that colors their live performances. Each track highlights the best of what each of them brings to the table lyrically and melodically and is a showcase of how what Jordan and Sasha do together surpasses any success they might achieve separately.
Featuring the ballads that earned them acclaim (notably “Obvious” and “Stars”), a spoken word performance encapsulated within an emotive piano solo (“Outro”), and an R&B bop that will have you looking for your roller skates (“The Cure”), MARCOTTE’S Good For My Soul is set for release April 1st.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has had some very direct struggles. Early in our love story, we faced all kinds of insecurities and beliefs that stifled the ability to just open up and let someone else love us deeply.
More current, a music career is full of the unknown. We’ve battled through many trials that I’d say most go through when trying to pursue music. The stronger forces are the doubts in your mind or from others wondering if you’ll be successful. Most of the time succession is defined as fame and money. For us, we try and challenge that view by identifying success as influence and sustainability.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We write, record and perform music as a duo.
What we hear most is how transparent we are as performers. Singing a duet is one thing. Being married and realizing there’s not much separation between all of life and the music you present is another. It’s been a value since day one that’d we never fake our feelings or emotions on stage just to try and create a facade in front of others.
We’re very proud of the foundation we’ve laid as people pursuing music. From dating to engagement to marriage and now as new parents, we haven’t wavered in our pursuit – even now bringing our daughter everywhere with us and showing her that she’s not burden or a hindrance to how we move forward.
As a duo, we think our overall sound is a little different than most duos someone might hear. Though we have traces of the singer/songwriter sound, we lend ourselves to genres that have influenced us like r&b, jazz and soul music.
What’s next?
Now that we’ve recently released our new EP, we’re planning to get back on the road to tour and play shows. That’s our sweet spot.
The biggest change is learning now how to travel as a whole family.
