Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica Andrews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Andrews.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am Jessica M. Andrews, a Pro Makeup Artist, Licensed Esthetician, and Beauty Educator. I’m the Founder and CEO of J’s Makeup Artistry Inc., which includes a luxury mink lash line, cosmetics, and skincare products. My beauty journey began at the tender age of 14 when I first fell in love with makeup while performing as a dancer at my hometown church. Growing up, I was often bullied because I didn’t look or dress like the other girls, and makeup became a way for me to escape and feel beautiful and confident. It gave me a sense of empowerment that I wanted to share with others. From there, I started practicing on others to perfect my skills, leading me to eventually attend Bellus Academy in Manhattan, Kansas, in 2015. Bellus Academy is known for being one of the top beauty schools in the Midwest, and by March of 2016, I became the Director of the Makeup Artistry program. Over the years, I have educated hundreds of successful beauty professionals.

My career continued to soar as I gained recognition for my talents and hard work. My portfolio has grown to include various specializations, such as High Fashion Runway, Avant-Garde, Print & Special FX, Bridal, and Theatre Makeup. My work has taken me to some of the most prestigious fashion events, including New York Fashion Week, Omaha Fashion Week, and Kansas City’s Heartland International Fashion Week, where I currently serve as the Director of the Glam Team.

In addition to my freelance work, I launched J’s Makeup Artistry Inc., which continues to grow in the beauty and skincare space. In 2019, I began my own luxury mink lash line, and in 2021, I officially launched my cosmetic line, followed by my skincare line in 2022. My products are now available in Hy-Vee grocery stores, with locations in Manhattan, Kansas, and Liberty, Missouri, making me one of the few small business owners to have my products featured in such major retail stores. In 2022, I was also selected as one of the top 15 finalists in the Hy-Vee Pitch Competition at Arrowhead Stadium and was nominated for the Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Spark MHK.

My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, and I credit much of my success to my faith in God, who has been at the forefront of my life and career. As a single mother to a 14-year-old son named Jor’Dan, who works alongside me in the business, I am also committed to teaching him about entrepreneurship and preparing him for success.

Some of my major milestones include:

2015: Graduated from Bellus Academy, named one of the top beauty schools in the Midwest.
2016: Became Director of the Makeup Artistry Program at Bellus Academy.
2017: Named Makeup Artist of the Year at the Midwest Awards Ceremony.
2017: Director of Hair & Makeup for Heartland International Fashion Week.
2018-2019: Lead Artist at New York Fashion Week.
2019: Featured at Omaha Fashion Week.
2019: Started my Luxury Mink Lash Line.
2021: Launched my official Cosmetic Line.
2022: Expanded the cosmetic line into skincare and launched it in Hy-Vee stores.
2022: Published in The Mercury Newspaper.
2022: Nominated for Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year by Spark MHK.
2023: J’s Makeup Artistry Inc. nominated for the Kansas Business Commerce Award.
2023: Casted for a reality Entreprenuer Tv Show called (The Blox) Hosted by Wes Burgman
2024: Launched product line in a second Hy-Vee store location in Liberty, Missouri.
2025: Won 3rd place in the Commerce Uplift Pitch Competition with Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills.
As I look toward the future, I’m determined to continue my mission to empower others through beauty, education, and entrepreneurship. J’s Makeup Artistry Inc. is just getting started, with plans for further expansion into other retailers, new product lines, and continued success in the beauty industry. I remain committed to using my platform and business to inspire others, especially women, to pursue their dreams and embrace their beauty.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced numerous challenges along the way. One of the biggest struggles has been access to capital. As a small business owner, securing funding to support my growth and expansion has often been difficult. Many times, I’ve had to rely on my own savings and hard work to keep my business afloat and take it to the next level.

Another challenge I’ve encountered is dealing with naysayers—people who doubted my vision, my ability to succeed, or my place in the competitive beauty industry. At times, it was disheartening, but I chose to let it fuel me rather than discourage me. It only motivated me to work harder, prove my worth, and show the world that I could succeed.

Additionally, managing the balance between being a single mother and running a business has been a constant challenge. There are days when it feels overwhelming, but I’ve learned to prioritize, delegate, and stay focused on my long-term goals. I also rely on my son, Jor’Dan, who works with me in the business, and he has been a source of strength and inspiration.

Breaking into retail spaces like Hy-Vee was another challenge. Even after my products were on the shelves, maintaining those relationships and scaling up has been an ongoing journey.

Lastly, growing a brand and gaining consumer trust in a competitive industry has been an ongoing battle. It took years of consistency, building a loyal customer base, and offering quality products to gain the recognition I have today.

Despite these struggles, I am grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the strength I’ve gained. Every challenge has shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today, and I’m more determined than ever to continue pursuing my dreams and helping others do the same.
