Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Marquette.
Hi Jay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been practicing physical therapy since graduating from Wichita State in 1999. I opened my own clinic in January of 2007, and we have grown from one therapist to 9 therapists in two locations! We opened the De Soto location in 2008 servicing the local area and western Olathe along the K-10 corridor where we still remain. We started our first clinic in 2007, in a one treatment room shared office space in Merriam/Overland Park area and moved to Leawood office in 2011 with now 6 private treatment rooms. We have been successful and continue to grow thanks to our awesome staff and being unique in the physical therapy industry by offering one-one care and adding that special hometown small business feeling to our wonderful and loyal clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road, but has been a fun ride. We have a saying with our staff of being on or off the bus. We want our entire staff to always be on the bus and ready for any challenges or bumps in the road! We had to go through the economic drop in 2008, which hit us financially hard as it did to most everyone. We continued to grow after that until Covid-19 hit, and boy was that an obstacle! Losing over half our clients in a week’s time, dealing with everyone’s stress about their health and their love ones’ health was very challenging. However, our staff was amazing doing telehealth visits, cleaning, and being flexible with their loss of hours. We were able to weather the storm and have added 3 more therapist in 2021.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an outpatient physical therapy clinic treating post-surgical issues, sports injuries, plantar fasciitis, neck/back pain, balance and/or vestibular problems, post-concussion, etc. We specialize in one-one client to therapist care with no techs or aides treating the client. We are known for the Graston Technique which is an instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization technique as well as dry needling. We also have a certified women’s pelvic health PT in our Leawood clinic. I am most proud of being able to succeed in this physician owned and hospital owned physical therapy world we currently live in. I think this has to do with the personalized level of care we deliver to our clients.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The biggest advice I give my students and those wishing to pursue owning their own business, it to take business classes. I highly encourage them to not try and do it all yourself and hire people that are passionate, smarter than you, and make sure their goals line up with yours.
