Daily Inspiration: Meet Jaden Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaden Anderson.

Hi Jaden, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Tricking is a blend of a few different disciplines of martial arts, gymnastics, breakdancing, and acrobatics. And it can be seen in many forms of pop culture media like movies and music videos. Dubsurd Tricking started in the early 2010s as a group of friends in the KC area who shared a passion for tricking. Our local community started growing in size as a result of us introducing our other friends to tricking, as well as teaching classes at a handful of gymnastics gyms around the city. The term “dubsurd” is a combination of the words; ‘dub’, which is term used in tricking to describe any trick with a double twist, and ‘absurd’, which was a good adjective to describe our group early on. Co-founder of Dubsurd Michael Guthrie coined this term sometime in 2012, and in 2014 we started an Instagram account (@dubsurd) to highlight some of the local athletes in our community. In the years since, we have become a well-known name in the world of tricking. We travel to tricking events all over the country to compete and train with other athletes, and we host an event in KC every year with dozens of athletes coming from all over the US and overseas to showcase their skills. We do performances at local public and corporate events, have new lines of clothing and merchandise every year, and can be seen doing our thing in some music videos! Two of our team members, Michael Guthrie (@michaelguthrie2) and Josh Ladevich (@josh_ladevich) are signed professional trickers with Adrenaline Worldwide.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been a smooth road, but the successes we’ve had are even sweeter because of it! Tricking is still a very underground sport that most people don’t even know exists, so it was a struggle to get our name out there in the beginning… Because it is such a small sport, tricking doesn’t have much money in it currently. There were plenty of times where we had to pay for event expenses or new merchandise out-of-pocket.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As co-founder of the brand, I fill many different shoes. Our journey so far has given me experience with live performances, event planning and coordination, graphic designer, videography/photography, creative directing, marketing, and so much more… I take pride in being a jack-of-all-trades and running Dubsurd has given me the opportunity to be that.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
All of my best memories are of my family!
