Daily Inspiration: Meet Isaac Roberson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Roberson.

Hi Isaac, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in August 2021 when I decided to formally pursue my passion for filmmaking. I enrolled at the University of Central Missouri, majoring in Digital Media Production with an emphasis in Cinematic Arts. That summer, I found myself deeply immersed in movies and TV shows—not just enjoying the characters, but becoming fascinated by the storytelling, creativity, and craftsmanship behind the scenes. I realized I didn’t just want to be an audience member; I wanted to be part of the process that brings stories to life. That passion for the art and technical side of filmmaking led me to dedicate my studies and hands-on experiences toward becoming a filmmaker.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I recently released a film this past April, which was a huge success for me, but before that, I faced a lot of setbacks. There were several projects I started but never finished—whether it was due to timing issues, people backing out, or even my own dissatisfaction with the direction. Each of those experiences felt like a failure at the time, but looking back, they were valuable lessons. They taught me how to adapt, plan better, and refine my creative process. One thing I’ve always been proud of is that I never gave up, even when I didn’t have much to show for my work. That persistence is what ultimately helped me get to where I am now.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an independent film director, screenwriter, and producer, with a strong focus on creating thriller films that center around organized crime. About 90% of the scripts I’ve written or have in development fall into that genre. I’m fascinated by taking a crime-centered plot and fleshing out the characters—whether they’re the ones committing the crime or those standing against it. I enjoy exploring their motivations, giving them depth, and creating layers that allow audiences to connect with them.

I’m most proud of my ability to collaborate. Filmmaking is never a one-person job—it’s a team effort. I thrive in those moments when someone on my team suggests an idea that’s even stronger than what I originally envisioned, and together, we make the scene better.

What sets me apart is my complete dedication to the craft. When I’m working on a film, I’m determined to make it the best it can possibly be. The unique thing is, it never feels like ‘work’ to me—I truly love the process, and that passion and obsession for filmmaking is something I know will carry me far.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. I see things more as “it is what it is.” Sometimes you can work hard and things don’t go your way, but I don’t consider that bad luck—just part of the process. I believe everything happens for a reason, and if something is meant for you, it will happen. If it’s not, then it’s simply not meant to be. This mindset helps me stay focused on what I can control—my work, my effort, and my persistence.
