Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Sears.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a camera in hand. Whether it be one that I bought with my own money or stealing my aunts cameras. In 2010 I took some photos of my cousins children and when those were posted, many started asking if I would take their family’s photos and others said I should start a business. In 2011 I started taking paying clients and I’ve been doing it ever since. My goal has always been to be better than my former work and that has served my business well. I’m always striving to give my clients the best work that I can.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been pretty bumpy if I’m being honest. Trying to find time to do photo sessions with raising small children and work around my husband’s schedule did not leave much time. There were so many nights that I stayed up till 2 or 3am editing while my family slept. Then turned around and woke up at 6am to be mom. Things smoothed out for a few years and although I was still editing at night, I was able to take on more sessions. Then my husband died in 2020 and that rocked my world. I took on much less photo sessions because I was trying to juggle raising my children alone, care for my house alone, and deal with my own grief.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I offer family, milestones, cake smashes, newborn, maternity, seniors, weddings, and boudoir photography but now specializing in maternity, newborn, and boudoir photography. I am most proud of my studio that I’ve created that has allowed for more diversity in my work and designated spaces for different session types. Being able to have my own studio and my constant desire to be better than my past self has set me apart from others. I also include all hand edited digital downloads with each session. There’s no need to purchase additional packages to receive your images. My business is LBGTQ+ and polyam supportive.
What are your plans for the future?
I’d love to continue to hone in my skills overall but especially newborn and boudoir. I’m already trained in newborn photography safety and my doula certification also has helped me when it comes to newborn safety. Going forward though I plan to design and create new boudoir spaces in my studio. I currently have 2 boudoir sets and I have plans to add at least 1 more currently.
