Today we’d like to introduce you to Essence Smith.
Hi Essence, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As I began to plan and search for locations to have reception places for others just doing volunteer work, my BIG COUSIN/AUNTIE as I like to call her told me that I have a gift and I need to use it and go for it. So, I quickly realized and saw how good I really was so I just jumped out on faith and ran with it.
So, I began to notice how much you can even make off by doing something you truly loved, and I have seen a huge investment opportunity. Going in, I didn’t know that it took so much of my time, and I still had our regular day job which I am currently still working. However, I decided to go for it and the hard work began! I did some of everything to prepare myself from studying the industry and coming up with a plan to start my own event planning company. I spent so many nights looking up on the web, searching for courses to take, seeking information, etc. I just could not believe I was about to be a business owner. It took me roughly a few months to see and gather what I needed to move forward. After getting all of that, I applied for my LLC. Afterwards, I was just moving and grooving. I love to make others happy no matter what and this is the one thing that I love most about what I do. This career is so amazing. Each and every day you learn new things. I truly have built so many relationships. I love it! I am so truly blessed by GOD to be able to keep going with my business after the pandemic. Also, I added a new service to my business. I launched a T-shirt company as well, which is steadily growing. This has truly opened my eyes that through it all God still makes a way like no other.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To be honest, it has not always been smooth. In this business, clients are not as easy to please as one may assume. You can go over and beyond for your clients, and you will still have some that just are not happy. However, you do have a few clients that you can make happy and appreciate the time and effort that you put into making their big day what they expected and so much more. I also had to learn that all money is not good money. When you are building a brand, you have to remember everyone is not going to help you in building that brand. Unfortunately, there will be times where you have to turn down services as neither of you will benefit from working together regardless of the price offered.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
So, what exactly is the work I do? I work with our brides in both full planning and/or day of coordination capacities to ensure that they have exactly the right amount of support throughout the entire process. I also do event planning for other events such as birthday parties, proms, corporate events, family reunions, engagement parties, bridal showers, and so much more. You tell me what you would like to have, and we will work together to achieve it.
One thing I know for sure is that I am a go-getter. I will make sure that any and everything is achieved when planning weddings. It makes me proud to make sure and know that all of my clients are happy. One thing that sets me apart from others in the same field is that I am extremely unique in the ways that I use to manage my clients. I am definitely an overachiever.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The qualities you should have are great customer service skills at all times and the ability to not let the little things bother you. Remember to always pray no matter what, especially when you get that one client that seems hard to please. Keep God first in all that you do as you start your new journey.
