Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sue Reagan, D.C..
Hi Dr. Sue, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I knew from a young age that I wanted to help people; I just never knew how until I got into college. I originally started school at Morningside University to get a degree in Accounting, and later learned it was not for me. After talking with one of the counselors at the school, they showed me a degree path for Chiropractic that would end in 3 years at their school. I shadowed a couple different chiropractors in Sioux City, IA, asked a lot of questions, and realized I really enjoyed the fact that every patient, and everyday was completely new and different. So I completed a BS in Biology, Chemistry, and Business and headed off to complete my Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleveland University – Kansas City. Right before I graduated, I ended up becoming a mom to my amazing little girl, and took some time off to focus on my family before jumping in to owning a business. A couple months after graduating, I was fortunate enough to meet my mentor, Dr. Linda Buckmiller, D.C., who showed me how I could start my own practice and gave me a place to get the ball rolling. So, I decided to build Living Garden Chiropractic in hopes of helping the people in the community create a space that is inviting and promotes healing and wellness. The town of Smithville has been so incredibly inviting and kind to me as a new business owner, solidifying my decision was the right call to make.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In school, they started our program with some of the hardest classes all at once, putting us around 30 credit hours in the first semester. Navigating so many tough classes at once was a struggle at first, but it gets easier when you finally find your rhythm and better time management skills. Being a new mom and navigating that with being a business owner comes with its challenges as well. Trying to find child care, trying to learn how to be a mom for the first time, finding a community of people to rely on and build a support system can all be challenging when you are also creating something from the ground up. Then once I created Living Garden Chiropractic, the main struggles I now deal with is typical to starting any new business, trying to find clients and patients. I am fortunate to be in a practice with other people who already had foot traffic and people coming in as new patients to help me start building my patient-base.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a family Chiropractor. What that means is I supply care for anyone, newborn babies all the way to geriatric patients. I have accommodations for pregnant moms, post-partum moms (including those who have had C-sections), newborn babies, young children, people with mobility issues, and more. I use a combination of manual adjusting and instrument assisted adjustments, mainly with an activator and drop tables. The instrument assisted adjusting helps people who may be more sensitive to adjusting, who have osteoporosis or “brittle bones”, and people who don’t need heavy adjusting. I am most proud of the incredible outcomes in the patients I have been seeing. What sets me apart is that I have experience as a new mom in this new age we live in, I work closely with families as a whole, and most of the chiropractors I am aware of in the Smithville area, don’t focus on whole families, but rather individual people. I have seen that when entire families get adjusted together, the family dynamics can change. Each individual can be less overstimulated, more relaxed, and end up being able to work together as a family unit easier.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love helping the people in my community find wellness. Seeing people go from being absolutely miserable from dealing with pain that may have made it difficult to get dressed in the morning or be able to work and turn around and smile coming into the office; there is no feeling like it. I am thankful I have had the opportunity to bring smiles to the faces of some that are dealing with so much more than even I know of.
