Today we’d like to introduce you to Darron Green.
Hi Darron, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I Started out as an apprentice at a small tattoo shop in Liberty MO, called Cherokee Rose, I finished my apprenticeship and had a pretty rough falling out with my mentor that I’d rather not go into detail about, but I left Cherokee Rose and went to another local tattoo shop to work for 2 years before deciding to go off on my own to eventually build Sanctioned Arts. I didn’t realize how much really went into owning your own business but we learned the hard way! I Opened Sanctioned Arts Tattoo Company at the age of 25, we started with the bare minimum and slowly worked our way up, it wasn’t perfect but it was ours. In the last 6 years of being open we have had highs and lows, between Covid and lock downs to winning awards at conventions it’s definitely been a roller coaster! After 6 years I feel like we’re just now starting to really develop into something different. In August we will now be opening Sanctioned Barber Company within Sanctioned Arts blending both worlds of tattoo and barber.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh no, it’s been one of the biggest learning experiences ever. From the Landlord changing the address to employees deleting my entire calendar. There’s so many things we have gone through to get to where we are, we started as minimal as I think you could, I’ve had to redo the floors in the shop 4 times in 6 years. I feel like we are just now getting to where things are getting easier, but there will always be struggles and we will figure out how to get through it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So originally when I started, I was a new school artist, New School is more of a Cartoony Style, which helped me learn to draw really well. I quickly found out when i started tattooing the most people don’t like the cartoony style in Kansas City so it was very hard to sell. So I decided to start focusing on Realism and Surrealism and I think that’s where I found the most success. But having those New School roots allowed me to figure out how to draw almost anything, so when someone comes in and sits with me, if it’s not something super specific like a portrait or an animal 9 times out of 10 I’ll more than likely be free handing it. Which really sets me apart, it creates more of an experience when you sit in my chair, because you watch the art come to life.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
