Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlise Cole.
Hi Charlise, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
God took a chance on me I was hit by a car at 9 years old the doctors said I would be functioning like a 3 year old for the rest of my life. Seemed like all odds were against me, growing up I wanted to be a pediatrician, but getting pregnant at 16 having baby by 17 also the trials I faced made me not want to miss out on those moments with my son. I was a stay at home mom I would also be doing something with my hair or even doing unique styles on my baby. I would also talk like I would like to goto cosmetology school. It seemed like all odd were against me. Until I just stepped out on faith and enrolled to House of Heavilin blue springs. Doing hair for me is something that brings me peace. It activates me to be creative.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road. Some of the struggles I faced were getting treated unfairly because I have an aura that most find intimidating. Getting into a car accident 5 months last of hair school then finding out I was pregnant. My only income being the tips I made from school or doing grocery deliveries. Having to walk to and from school when I didn’t have a ride. Trying to homeschool while going to school most of the day. Then finishing school no clientele coming into a shop I’m a very introvert person so I had no choice but to step out of my comfort zone to put myself out there. I had no idea how I was going to get hair supplies let alone be paying booth rent. Everything was foreign to me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Being in school I always said I want to be able to do everything I don’t want to limit myself to just one thing I believe that’s what sets me apart from others. I work with color, natural hair, locs, braids, hair cuts, skin care, you name it. Not only do I work with adults I also work with the kids. I’m most proud of myself for still being here standing strong without a clue of what the future looks like.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My kids are my biggest cheerleaders they are what keeps me going because I’m building a legacy for them. My kids dad watching the kids so I am able to go and grow my business. Waylon the owner of the shop I work at he didn’t have to give me a spot at his shop but he did and he’s given so much wisdom and pushed me to step out of my comfort zone into my full potential. My clients supporting me by adding my services into their budget plays a big part into my success without them I wouldn’t be able to grow the way that I am.
