Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Woods
Hi Brent, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, first things first as a kid I always recognized my identity was attached to either sports or just being an athlete in general. Growing up I was a headstrong football player who always thought muscles and bruteness was all I needed to be successful and to make it to college. That way of thinking actually got me a scholarship to play football in college. My biggest goal was to prove that a 5’8 strong safety could make it to college on a scholarship and that’s exactly what I did. I would work out twice a day, follow a meal plan, and sometimes I would be at planet fitness until 11pm on a school night. All that hard work paid off until the third game of my senior year of high school I tore my labrum and played the rest of the season with it. Going to multiple doctor visits and MRI’s it took a last resort arthroscopy to repair my shoulder just in time for me to heal and get into collegiate football shape before I reported for my freshman year. Football went great we won our conference and then came spring ball when I tore my opposite shoulder. One of the hardest decisions I had to make was to stop playing football and switch over to Cheer which actually opened up a bunch of doors to new opportunities and possibilities. From it got me comfortable being uncomfortable and push past limits I didn’t even know i could push past. Originally going to school for nursing I switched to kinesiology and found out that I could help a lot of people with their body. After school I got my NASM certification and began personal training at my local
Planet fitness and group fitness coaching at Orangetheory. I have been at the Parkville studio, downtown for a little, and my home studio ended up being in Olathe. Me and a group of people built a gym in Waldo called Co-Op, when I left there I eventually became the head coach for the Athlete Factory in liberty. I never expected to love the process of coaching athletes and seeing them progress and grow in life/sports. I became my own business owner and started an LLC for my fitness called B Fit With Brent where I even found myself traveling for trainings. Deciding to add more avenues to my tool box I started helping with an artificial intelligence company called Optimally Business Performance where we create certain automations to improve efficiency within small businesses. Since I’ve started I’ve seen how it could be implemented in gyms and even bigger contracts like the IRS for example. Between self employed tax credit consultation, personal training, and entrepreneur ventures I realized life doesn’t have to be so secular. I still remember way back at a point of time all I knew and identified as was a football player. Now look at me!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Now it hasn’t always been a smooth road like I said between different injuries, switching companies seeing Covid at least different avenues of business is changing because of Covid and of course the economy changing government changing is just a whole different variables that go into what I am so far today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
With personal training, I specialize in functional movement. The injuries I’ve had required countless hours of rehab and understanding the scope of kinesiology (body movement down to a cellular level) I can say between the average NASM personal trainer and me, I have a little bit more background to diagnose certain problems or certain habits and then offer solutions or ways alleviate pain/dysfunction. Along with helping people build a solid foundation of motor control. Im most proud of building a strong basis of being someone who’s not looking to lift over 1000pounds or run 50 miles an hour it’s about being the most efficient with whatever your goal is. For me my goal is understand the full scope of my injuries I’ve had and rebuild my mind to body connection. Yes I can life heavy still but in terms of goals it is not ideal. Im proud of understanding the reality of life and being able to manage and still do it at my own pace and still having the same love and just being able to use my body how I want to. Being able to teach that to people who don’t always knows fitness doesn’t have to hurt or be something that you hate like taking vitamins.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I guess I was probably the goofiest funniest laid-back kid. You could probably meet love playing outside and staying active. Of course I love video games even though it wasn’t good at them. I knew I was athletic, but of course I was always small in the most kids so but whenever there is competitions, I kind of took it apart, which probably turned me into or I am now.
