Daily Inspiration: Meet Brendan Whisenant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan.

Hi Brendan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Brendan Whisenant, a husband, father, and someone who’s built his life around hard work, second chances, and showing up for people. Today, I lead Strategic Partnerships at CDL Legal, working with carriers and partners across the country to help protect drivers and strengthen businesses in the transportation industry. Alongside that, I run two companies, Royally Forked Catering and X-Factor Business & Transportation Solutions, both of which are deeply personal to me.

I was born in California but grew up in Overland Park, Kansas, and Kansas City is home, no question about it. My roots here run deep. On my mom’s side, there’s a legacy of entrepreneurship tied to businesses like Sullivan Beverage and Dalton’s Flowers, people who built something lasting in this city. On my dad’s side, it’s a different story, but just as powerful, a long line of blue-collar construction workers who built their lives with their hands, through grit and sacrifice.

I grew up between those two worlds, and honestly, I think that’s where a lot of who I am comes from. I saw what it meant to build something from nothing, but I also saw how hard life can get. Bouncing between Kansas City and the West Coast, I experienced a lot early, different cultures, different environments, and different challenges. Somewhere along the way, I became an old soul without even realizing it.

My career didn’t follow a traditional path. I wasn’t the classroom type. But give me an opportunity, and I’d figure it out. That mindset led me into the transportation industry, where I’ve spent nearly 20 years learning, growing, and earning my place. It’s an industry that doesn’t hand anything to you; you have to show up, solve problems, and build trust. That’s exactly what I’ve done.

Today, at CDL Legal, I get to bring all of that experience together, helping carriers navigate risk, protect their drivers, and build stronger operations through strategic partnerships that actually make a difference.

But there’s another side of my story that means just as much.

Royally Forked was born out of passion, but it was also built during some of the hardest times in my life. Cooking became more than just food; it became a way to reconnect, to create, and to give something positive to people. There’s something powerful about bringing people together over a meal, about creating a moment where everything else fades away. That’s what Royally Forked is to me.

X-Factor is where I give back everything I’ve learned. It’s about helping small businesses, especially in trucking, navigate the same challenges I’ve faced, but with better tools, better support, and a clearer path forward.

When I look back, nothing about my journey has been straight or easy. But every experience, good and bad, shaped me into who I am today. I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding the hard moments. It’s about how you respond to them, how you grow from them, and how you use them to build something meaningful.

At the end of the day, everything I do, whether it’s in transportation, business, or the kitchen, comes down to one thing: creating something that matters and taking care of people along the way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up wasn’t easy. We went through some tough times, but what always stood out to me was how this city shows up for its people, friends helping friends, families lifting each other. That grit and generosity became part of who I am.

I got to work as soon as I could. School never really fit me, but give me a job and I’d figure it out. Early on, I learned that hard work and sacrifice aren’t optional; they’re the price of building anything worthwhile. I wasn’t college-bound, but I discovered something that’s carried me through every chapter of my life: I can connect with people. That’s been my edge.

After high school, life came at me fast. I had plans for the military, but instead found myself out on my own, working, learning, and honestly, partying harder than I should have. For a long time, I wore confidence like armor. From the outside, it looked like strength. It wasn’t. I was struggling.

Eventually, it caught up to me. I hit a point where I was depressed, angry, and exhausted from pretending everything was fine. One night, after drinking all day, I nearly ended my life. My wife, my hero, stepped in at exactly the right moment. She didn’t hesitate. She said, “We’re done with this. Let’s go get help.” And she meant it.

That moment changed everything.

I went to rehab for alcohol and depression. For the first time in years, I faced myself; no distractions, no excuses. I walked out differently. Not fixed, not perfect, but aware, accountable, and alive. I made the decision to step away from everything I knew and rebuild from the ground up. I had to relearn how to live, how to cope, and how to show up without leaning on alcohol.

Today, I’m seven years sober.

From there, things started to take shape. I built a career I’m proud of in the transportation industry, working closely with carriers, drivers, and attorneys to help protect and strengthen their businesses. At the same time, I reignited a passion that had always been there, cooking.

After the pandemic, Royally Forked Catering really took off. We focused on meaningful events, giving back, and perfecting our craft. Then life threw another challenge my way: cervical spine surgery in 2025. Three months at home, limited mobility, and a business that was still finding its footing.

But I’ve learned not to waste adversity.

During that recovery, I dialed in our signature BBQ rub. I treated it like a project, tested it, refined it, sent it to R&Dand entered an online cooking competition. Once again, the community showed up. I placed well, got invited to cook my crab bisque on live TV, and suddenly, Royally Forked had real momentum.

It hasn’t been a smooth road, but every setback, every mistake, every hard moment built something in me. I don’t see failure as something that defines you. It’s something that teaches you if you’re willing to listen.

And that’s really been the story: fall, learn, rebuild… and keep moving forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I’m a transportation professional. I currently lead Strategic Partnerships at CDL Legal, where I work with carriers, safety consultants, and businesses across the country to build relationships that protect drivers, strengthen compliance, and ultimately keep companies operating at a higher level. My role is about more than partnerships; it’s about creating real solutions in an industry that doesn’t have room for mistakes.

Alongside that, I own and operate two businesses I’m deeply passionate about: Royally Forked Catering and X-Factor Business & Transportation Solutions.

Royally Forked isn’t just a catering company; it’s personal. It was built during one of the most challenging seasons of my life, and it represents resilience, creativity, and connection. At its core, it’s about creating experiences. I truly believe one great meal can shift someone’s entire day, even if it’s just for a moment. That’s what we aim to deliver every single time.

X-Factor is where I pour everything I’ve learned from the transportation and business world back into others. I work with small to mid-sized companies, especially in trucking, to help them operate smarter, stay compliant, and grow without burning themselves out in the process. This industry can be unforgiving, and I’ve lived that reality. X-Factor exists to simplify the chaos and give business owners a real path forward.

What I specialize in is bridging gaps between compliance and operations, between risk and growth, and most importantly, between people and the solutions they actually need.

What I’m most proud of isn’t just the businesses, it’s the impact. Whether it’s helping a carrier avoid a major compliance issue, building a partnership that creates new revenue streams, or serving a meal that brings people together, it all comes back to the same thing: creating value that lasts.

What sets me apart is simple: I’ve lived it. I’m not speaking from theory or a textbook. I’ve been in the trenches, I’ve made mistakes, I’ve rebuilt, and I’ve figured out how to connect the dots across industries. That real-world experience, combined with my ability to build relationships, is what allows me to do what I do at a high level.

At the end of the day, I’m here to help people win, whether that’s on the road, in business, or around the table.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
First, understand this: it’s hard. There’s no shortcut around that. Accept it early. Then ask yourself one question—is the juice worth the squeeze? If it is, then go all in. Outwork people. Outlast people. Stay in the fight longer than anyone else is willing to.

You’re going to fail. That’s part of it. So fail fast, fail forward, and learn something every single time. The only real failure is staying down or refusing to grow from it.

I also wish I had understood earlier that you don’t have to carry everything alone. If you’re dealing with addiction, mental health struggles, or just life hitting you harder than expected, it’s okay to admit it. It doesn’t make you weak, and it doesn’t mean you’re broken. Get help, be honest with yourself, and keep moving forward.

Strength isn’t about pretending you’re fine; it’s about facing what’s real and choosing to keep going anyway.

If I could boil it all down, it’s this: stay consistent, stay honest, and don’t quit on yourself.

“Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving; we get stronger and more resilient.” — Steve Maraboli
