Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Matthews.
Hi Breanna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I can remember, I have loved to express myself through different creative outlets. When I was in middle school, I started filming YouTube videos on my iPhone. I would do makeup tutorials, clothing hauls, and DIY videos, basically whatever was popular at the time.
In high school, I started taking social media a little more seriously and I would regularly post on YouTube and Instagram and began creating a brand for myself, but I still hadn’t found my niche yet. Growing up, I loved anything creative including photography, videography, and editing. In my senior year of high school, I started doing professional photography and specialized in senior photography.
I started with just my friends and then began expanding to the Kansas City metro area. When I got to college, I decided to hone in on a niche and began creating lifestyle content that includes vlogs, weeks in my life, and featured more of my day-to-day life. I also started partnering with various brands and companies on my social media and actually making money from something that had just started out as a hobby in middle school.
I had such a passion for content creation and social media that I started freelancing on the side. I would create content, run social media, or video production for local brands and other influencers. After I graduated from the University of Missouri, I decided to move back to Kansas City and pursue a career in the advertising and marketing industry.
I still create lifestyle content across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok while working a full-time job and I have adjusted my content to fit my new post-grad lifestyle.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been a lot of ups and downs throughout the years. When I first started, I experienced bullying, but surprisingly it wasn’t from people at school, it was from random strangers online making fun of the way I talk or the clothes I wear.
That was hard for me at first because I had never experienced something like that before, it’s, unfortunately, something that has never stopped and has continued across all my platforms. I’ve learned to let the negative comments and DMs roll off my back and make my platform a positive space for everyone. Like many other people, I also had a hard time during the pandemic.
There wasn’t a lot of content to create at the time since I wasn’t seeing friends, I had moved back home from college for the summer, and everyone was staying at their homes. I had to be more creative with my content and think outside the box.
I really dove into TikTok at that time and started creating content on the platform almost daily which was a lot of fun. The challenges I have faced have only made me grow stronger as a creator and just as a person in general.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a content creator and social media influencer. I specialize in curating content that drives engagement and brand awareness to consumers across my various platforms.
My main platforms are YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. I’m known for creating lifestyle content that shows my day-to-day activities. I think something that sets me apart from other influencers is that I also work full time and show through my content how I balance both.
Having a full-time job is something that fulfills my career goals and being an influencer and content creator on the side allows me to be creative with the content I make and not rely on brand deals or sponsorships so I’m free to make whatever content I want.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Like many other people, I also had a hard time during the pandemic. There wasn’t a lot of content to create at the time since I wasn’t seeing friends, I had moved back home from college for the summer, and everyone was staying at their homes.
I had to be more creative with my content and think outside the box. I really dove into TikTok at that time and started creating content on the platform almost daily which was a lot of fun. While I learned lessons related to content creation and being an influencer during that time, I also learned to cherish time spent with family and friends.
I learned that life can be so short and nothing should be taken for granted, I have tried to remember these lessons as life has started to get back to “normal” these past few months.
