Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Walker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In high school, my friend dared me/pushed me to join the school newspaper. Since I joined, I have fallen in love with making videos. I shot a documentary on the Shawnee Mission East Lacrosse team called FaceOff, which led to an internship at Mizzou Athletics.
There, I made social media content for their Men’s Basketball team and football team. Using that experience, I became a Diversity Equity and Inclusion Intern at the U.S.A. Cycling where I wrote articles, did social media management, and edited videos. After those experiences, I started to move into more commercial/traditional advertising.
I made promotional videos for ByDesign, a lifestyle brand and magazine. Finally, after that, I landed an internship at yoodle, an ad agency in KC, and an apprenticeship at VMLY&R. At yoodle, I have done videos, social media management, and a bit of graphic design.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it has been smooth since this is genuinely what I love to do. But it has been a lot of work.
Last summer, for example, I had an internship, apprenticeship, and I was doing freelance work. Sometimes I feel like I’ve worked away from my early 20s, but I feel very fortunate to meet the people I have and to be in the place I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My main skill is Videography and video editing. I have been doing that for a little over five years.
But I also do photography, graphic design, motion graphics, and a little copywriting. I would say I’m known for my videos but what sets me apart is I can do a little bit of everything. Video is my bread and butter, but I’m not afraid to try new things and learn.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I feel like people in KC are very friendly and always trying to help each other build.
I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today if the ByDesign team didn’t give me a chance to make videos for them! The same goes for yoodle and VMLY&R every day I feel so fortunate they gave me a chance to prove myself and learn!
This is so nitpicky, but the weather! It’s probably a midwest thing, but I swear one day it can be 90 degrees out, and the next day we get three feet of snow. Like how is that even possible??
