Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Crawford.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 12, 1922 by Seven brave educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, Cubena McClure, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, and Dorothy Hanley Whiteside.
Delta Eta Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Wyandotte County on September 19, 1973. The chapter was later reactivated in 2009 by 6 phenomenal women: Dr. Stacy Yeager-Okosi, La Shana McGee, Windy Peterson*, Danitra )Peterson) Hayes, Chastity Richmond, and Aketia Seymour.
Notable Sorority members include Hattie McDaniel, Kelly Price, MC Lyte, Sandra Bland, Martha Reeves, Victoria Rowell, and Maritza Correia McClendon to name a few.
Currently, our footprint of service extends into Wyandotte County and Johnson County. We are advocates for breast health and the fight against all cancers, financial literacy, and accessible and quality education for all. We also support our young ladies ages 12-18 in our auxiliary group known as the Rhoer Club to become future leaders and hone the greatness they have within.
Not only do we embody our Sorority’s slogan but we live by it: “Greater Service, Greater Progress!”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Serving the community is always rewarding no matter how little the funding or turn out. As long as we make a difference in one life, we are honoring our Founder’s vision and the mission of the sorority.
It is the mission of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to enhance the quality of life for women and their families in the U.S. and globally through community service, civil, and social action.
Our goal is to achieve greater progress in the areas of education, health awareness, and leadership development. Our members, affiliates, staff, and community partners work to create and support initiatives that align with our vision.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
