Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Lammers.
Hi Abby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been interested in art and design from a very young age. I received my BFA with an emphasis on a design from MSU and went to work. After spending 13 years in the advertising industry as an Art Director, I decided I needed a change and began painting. It’s hard to believe that I’ve worked as a professional artist for 27 years.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a painter has always been challenging from day one. It’s the type of career that is extremely competitive, and it requires you to wear many hats. The most important part is to stay focused on creating good quality, interesting and consistent work. Creating the work is a lengthy process but is also exciting and rewarding. My business has multiple moving parts beyond creating the product, such as marketing the work, keeping a social media presence, updating inventory lists, maintaining the website, shipping sold works, and being on the lookout for exhibition opportunities. I also make my frames which is a whole other process too lengthy to go into. Lastly, most artists are always searching for galleries to represent their work which is a challenging exercise breaking into a new market in such a competitive field. I am fortunate to be represented by Blue Gallery in Kansas City. Kelly and David Kuhn have an exciting and eclectic group of artists and I am honored to be a part of that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a fine arts painter of landscape painting in a contemporary realism style. I work in both acrylic and oil on both canvas and birch panels. The work is based on academic fundamentals and a realistic approach to working primarily from life. I also paint still lifes on occasion to break things up a bit. I am drawn to the beauty I find in simple and ordinary everyday scenes and objects you pass by daily. I want the viewer to reconsider everyday life through my presentation of common objects and scenes. My process begins with studying nature by creating small plein air works on site. I can then use what I gather from those sessions in the studio to make larger paintings. I typically work in a series of similar compositions varying the value patterns and color palette. I use this process to explore how color and value can change the mood of a painting. I portray a unique vision of my subjects so that everyday life becomes less invisible.
What do you think about luck?
To some extent, luck plays a role in everyone’s life, but for me as a painter, it’s more about being disciplined and showing up in front of the easel whether you feel like it or not. It’s about creating enough inventory, a day at a time. Then when an opportunity or “stroke of luck” presents itself you have work to offer up.
