Daily Inspiration: Meet Abbigale Porter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbigale Porter.

Hi Abbigale, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am beyond excited to be part of the new thermal bath experience coming to life right here in the heart of the West Bottoms. The spa world has been my home for over a decade, and throughout that time I’ve fallen in love with the art of caring for guests—helping people find nourishment, balance, and little moments of pause for themselves.

My journey started in the treatment room as a licensed esthetician, where I learned the power of one-on-one connection. From there, I worked my way into management, which carried me from a five-star destination spa to Galena, IL, where I had the chance to expand a resort spa. Those years were incredible, but being far from family for four years also reminded me just how much my heart longed to be back in Kansas City.

This past holiday season, the universe handed me the most beautiful opportunity—to join forces with Matthew Matsch and Kathryn McCormick in creating Klā. What we’re building isn’t just another spa—it’s a true retreat, a space designed with so much care and intention to offer guests a sacred moment of pause.
Stepping into Klā feels like stepping into something special, and I can’t wait to share it with our community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but every struggle and challenge has carried valuable lessons that shaped me along the way. This has truly been the largest project I’ve ever been a part of, and while the work can feel tireless at times, it’s also the most rewarding. There’s something incredibly special about being part of building Klā from the ground up, knowing that all of the effort and dedication will create a space where people can find true relaxation.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Spa Director at Klā, and my role is all about creating an experience that feels intentional and extraordinary. I build the team, design the menu, craft those little client delights, and help ensure our high standards are consistently upheld by our amazing staff.

If I had to name my specialty, it would be staff engagement. I absolutely love developing a team—being the person who hires them, supports them, and watches them grow into confident, thriving professionals. Seeing a team member blossom is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do, and it’s what I’m most proud of.

I’ve also been told I have a natural ability to sense people’s energy and really read individuals, which helps me connect deeply and bring out the best in both our staff and our guests. At the end of the day, I’m just a people person at heart, and creating those authentic connections is what drives everything I do.

What are your plans for the future?
Right now, my focus is on developing and growing this beautiful space, and really leaning into what we want to achieve in terms of guest engagement. My heart is 100% in creating experiences and spaces where people can have those true “ahhh” moments.

I’ve thought about Spa Consulting down the road, but for now my vision is crystal clear: to make Klā the premier spa destination in Kansas City. I’m excited to pour my energy into building something truly special here, and I look forward to watching it continue to evolve and touch more lives in the community.
