We’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
A to Z Theatrical Supply and Service is celebrating over 65 years in business.
In 1959, Dick McGehee started the company working out of his home, selling theatrical lighting and rigging equipment. As the business grew, Dick hired his brother Bill, and they expanded into a 6,000 square foot space in Kansas City. In 2013, Alex Perry merged the company with Fire Designs: Scenic Arts, which had been working in the theatrical world since 2000, and moved to its current 60,000 square foot home.
Since then, we have expanded to 3 locations (Kansas City, Wichita, and Milwaukee) with over 60 employees and multiple partnerships with local businesses, including Studio Floral and Events and The Arts Asylum. A to Z has been steadily expanding through fun and innovative projects within construction, events, and other corporate worlds.
Our core services are custom fabrications and installations; event production and rentals, including scenic, rigging, lighting, audio, video, props, soft goods, costumes, and talent.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been some struggles along the way, but these have only helped us grow. Of course, being a theatrical/entertainment company during the pandemic presented challenges, but we persevered and relied on our strengths to get us through. The theatre/arts industry is constantly evolving, and this is a welcome challenge as we push the bar on what is possible and are always eager to learn something new.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As the name implies, we do everything from A to Z. From costume services to fabrications to rigging installations, we do it all. We have a well-rounded team of creatives and professionals on staff who work together to bring our clients’ visions to life. As theatre professionals, our collaborative nature is a key factor in successfully executing our projects and productions. We are proud of our ability to take an idea and turn it into a reality, whether it be a custom prop or a permanent installation. We believe our creativity and willingness to collaborate are what set us apart.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Bringing imagination to life through collaboration is very important to us. Being able to take a singular, static idea and turn it into a dynamic reality as a team allows for complex problem-solving and bold ideas that may not be achieved individually. As theatre artists, we understand the importance of bringing people together through shared experiences. It’s with this understanding that we strive to work with all levels of theatre and live entertainment, from elementary school musicals to collegiate programs to touring productions and more.
