Conversations with Zoe Roarz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Roarz. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Zoe Roarz is a singer-songwriter “trying to make as much noise as possible.” Her music influences range across multiple genres. This all combines to a unique and raw quality of her music that you won’t hear anywhere else. Her discography holds the best of both worlds, high-energy rock songs and acoustic serenades. With Zoe’s music, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Zoe Roarz was first classically trained on the Clarinet starting at age 9. Roarz was then quick to learn piano & guitar.

She started writing songs at 12 years old and by 14 she was singing & playing in bars and venues around her city. At 16 she had made her first band, Big Brother and recorded a 5 track E.P. called Hype! You can stream the E.P. on most major streaming platforms.

Around age 19 she released her first full-length album Vomited Explanations.(Also on most major streaming services) Ranging from punk to jazz influences, this album is her documentation of being a teenager experiencing losses, frustrations, & victories she only knew how to express through song.

She has played venues & festivals as big as 18,000 people, opening for acts such as comedian & rock critic Don Jamieson from “That Metal Show” & musician Marc Rizzo of Superfly with her previous projects. She is also popular amongst local radio stations.

Over last summer Roarz released “Impostor Syndrome”, a pop-rock ballad about self-doubt and finding security in one’s self. The song was released with a DIY music video that’s available to watch on youtube.

Zoe’s most recent release titled “Stuck Inside”came out around last Halloween. It is a high-energy punk song that talks about the isolation of quarantine and the mental toll it has taken on us and compares it to being in Stephen King’s “The Shining”.

Roarz is currently working hard to release an E.P. very soon! So stay tuned! You won’t want to miss what this artist is cooking up next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve always had a battle with mental health. I am a neurodivergent person trying to fit into a neurotypical world. Like most neurodiverse people, it is a struggle every day to get up and participate in this world that is not accommodated to you. As a teenager, I struggled to stay out of mental hospitals.

For a very long time in my life, music and performing was the only thing keeping me going. If it wasn’t for the power of song I wouldn’t be here today with my friends and family and all the beautiful memories we’ve made since. If it wasn’t for music, I literally wouldn’t have any way of processing or understanding these big emotions and strange situations my life has thrown at me. Sometimes the only way to properly express something is through melodies. Some people play for fun, I play to live.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a punk singer-songwriter-musician. I love to play guitar, piano and sing. I am most known for my melodic screams and high-energy performances. I am most proud when I inspire others to play. The only thing I want to do on this big rock is to rock. Everywhere I go I just want to inspire more music into peoples’ lives.

As someone who finds it very hard to express themselves through words, it feels really good when I can get emotions or ideas out in other ways like through music. The cherry on top is when others understand the feelings too. Please pick up a guitar, or the tuba, whatever calls your name. Nothing is better than being able to express yourself. Find as many different outlets as you can.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Wherever and whenever you can, don’t do things for profit. Do things for passion. It doesn’t matter how much money we have or what we look like when we die. Do things for pleasure, do things for kindness, do things for fun. Squeeze it in wherever you can. No one is going to make room for that, you have to force it in.
